Two different forces act on a roofing membrane when a hailstone strikes it, and those two different forces can result in completely different looking hail damage from the very same hailstone. Both of these photos are from the same hailstone strike on a modified bitumen roof. The left photo is the top of the roof, and hail created concentric circle fractures as the material was affected by compression forces.

The photo on the right is the underside of that same membrane at the hail strike, where the forces acting on the membrane are tension and caused a completely different looking set of fractures.

As is the case frequently the adjuster and his engineer looked at hail damage like this and decide that the damage is merely cosmetic, not functional, and does not not warrant your ins company paying for a new roof.

Sometimes you have to dig deep into the system, even to the very bottom of it to find the damage. This damage is absolutely functional, and can actually cause roof leaks immediately.

This damage should be paid for by the insurance company, but it's not going to get paid for if you don't have somebody who knows how to look for it, identify it, and prove it to the insurance company. That's what we do at Alpha.
