Matthew, Maddie, and Jack had just finished roasting marshmallows in the backyard.

Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so rodent prevention isn't about waiting until you see a mouse—it's about finding the entry points before they move in.

•Door sweeps
•Gaps around plumbing & electrical lines
•Openings around AC lines
•Attic vents
•Gaps around pipes and utility penetrations
•Pet food and animal feed storage

Here's the part many homeowners don't realize: sealing the hole is often more important than simply catching the mouse. That's the prevention side of pest control—and it's a big part of keeping the problem from coming back.

WHY ARE WASPS SO ACTIVE RIGHT NOW?

If you feel like you're seeing more wasps around your home lately, you're not imagining it!

According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, social wasp colonies continue growing throughout the spring and summer. By late summer, colonies are at their largest, which means more worker wasps are out foraging for food and actively defending their nest. 🐝

That’s why August can bring a noticeable increase in wasp activity around:
• Eaves & porch ceilings
• Playsets
• Fences & mailboxes
• Sheds & outbuildings
• Shrubs & landscaping
• Around outdoor food and drinks

One important thing to know: the increase in activity doesn't necessarily mean there are suddenly more nests, it can mean the existing colonies are simply much larger and more active than they were earlier in the season.

So if you're noticing more wasps around your property this month, there's a reason!

🐜 The fire ant mound isn’t actually their home! Think that big dirt mound in your yard is where all the fire ants live? Not exactly! 👀

That mound you see above ground is actually the result of fire ants digging an underground network of tunnels and chambers and bringing the soil to the surface. The majority of the colony is hidden beneath the ground. And just how big can that hidden colony be? A single fire ant colony can contain more than 100,000 ants, all working together to care for and protect their queen. 👑🐜

That’s why a mound can seem to appear out of nowhere (especially after a good Texas rain). Fire ants may move soil around as they adjust their underground tunnels, making their activity much more noticeable. It’s also why effective fire ant control goes beyond simply knocking down a mound or treating the ants you see on the surface. Professional treatments are designed to target the colony (not just what’s visible above ground).

So the next time you spot a fire ant mound, remember:
What you see above ground is only a small glimpse of what’s happening underneath. 👀🐜 A quick walk around your property after rain can help you spot new activity before those little fire ants become a bigger problem.

It started with an itch...
Matthew noticed Mason's dog scratching more than usual.
Then Sophia came over complaining about itchy ankles after playing outside.
A few houses down, Maddie spotted tiny black specks hopping across the patio.
Everyone blamed Mason's dog.

🐜 Pest Pro Tip Monday

Don't Ignore One Ant...Have you ever seen one ant on your kitchen counter and thought, "I'll deal with it later"? 🐜 🐜 🐜

That single ant may actually be a scout.

Scout ants search for food and water, then leave a scent trail back to the colony so hundreds (or even thousands!) of other ants can follow.

If you spot one indoors, it's a good time to:
-Wipe away the trail with a household cleaner.
-Store food in sealed containers.
-Clean up crumbs and sticky spills.
-Check for places they're getting inside.

Stopping the scout early can help keep the rest of the colony from getting the invitation.

Ever feel like you're walking through the same spider web every morning? You're not imagining it (but it might not actually be the same web)!

Many orb-weaver spiders (the ones that spin those beautiful "Charlotte's Web" style webs) often take down or even eat their old web and build a fresh one overnight. They recycle the silk to create a new, sticky web that's better at catching breakfast!

So if a giant web keeps appearing across your favorite walkway each morning, chances are you've got one hardworking little architect working the night shift.
The good news? Orb-weavers are beneficial spiders that help catch mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects. 🪰🦟
