🐝 Bald-Faced Hornets: Not Bees, But a Serious Stinging Pest! 🐝

Did you know that what many people call a “hornet’s nest” is often home to bald-faced hornets—which are actually a type of yellowjacket wasp, not a true bee or hornet?

These insects play an important role in nature by helping control other insect populations, but they can become a serious safety concern when they build nests near homes, decks, driveways, play areas, or businesses.

⚠️ A few things to know:
• Their large gray papery nests can contain hundreds of workers by mid to late summer.
• Bald-faced hornets are highly protective of their colony and can sting multiple times if they feel threatened.
• Disturbing a nest can trigger the entire colony to defend it.

🐍 Meet the Northern Water Snake!

This beautiful Northern Water Snake was recently spotted soaking up the summer sun while our family was on a hike this weekend. These non-venomous snakes are commonly found near creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes throughout North Carolina. They are excellent swimmers and play an important role in the ecosystem by feeding on fish, frogs, and other aquatic animals.

Because of their thick bodies and defensive behavior when threatened, Northern Water Snakes are often mistaken for venomous cottonmouths. However, cottonmouths are not native to our area of North Carolina (they are found more near the Coastal Plains region), making the Northern Water Snake a much more likely sighting in our area.

While they are not venomous, they may bite if handled or cornered, so it’s always best to admire them from a safe distance and allow them to move along naturally.

Another Happy Ending! 🐦❤️

This beautiful Carolina Wren found its way into a customer’s garage and couldn’t find its way back out. Thankfully, A & M Wildlife and Pest Control was able to safely rescue this little feathered friend and release it back where it belongs.
