Whether or not anyone in your house is heading back to school, September has a way of feeling like a fresh start. So this month, we’re taking you back to class with your home’s September Syllabus—a crash course in creating a home that looks better, works better, and feels a little more you.

Color Theory 101: Work with what’s already in the room.
Interior Design 101: Create cohesion.
Shop Class: Fix the little things.
Earth Science: Take the lesson outside.
Art Class: Break a rule or two.
Study Hall: Figure out what actually needs changing.

Your final exam? What’s one thing you could change about your home this fall that would make you enjoy it more?

Want a room to feel a little softer and cozier? Try adding texture with paint. Techniques like limewashing or color washing use overlapping, imperfect brushstrokes to create subtle variations in tone and movement across a wall. The trick is to embrace the imperfection—work in loose, crisscrossing strokes and blend as you go rather than aiming for a perfectly uniform finish.

The result has more depth and character than a traditional solid wall, making it an easy way to bring warmth into a space without adding a single piece of seasonal décor.

In our last post, we shared how to bring that cozy fall feeling home without breaking out the Halloween decorations just yet. One of our favorite ways we mentioned? Steal fall’s color palette.

Enter Sherwin-Williams Bosc Pear; A warm, earthy golden hue that feels made for this in-between season. Think sun-dried grasses, warm wood, and those first golden leaves rather than gourds and ghosts.

Anyone else in Washington get one cool August morning and immediately start thinking about fall?

If pumpkins and spiderwebs still feel a little premature, borrow from the season instead:

🌿 Bring in olive, rust, ochre & warm neutrals
🧶 Swap light summer textures for something cozier
🌾 Clip branches or greenery from outside
🕯️ Turn on the lamps and embrace warmer lighting
🎨 Try a richer color in one small, unexpected spot

You don’t have to rush summer out the door to enjoy that first hint of fall.

Save the pumpkins for September. For now, steal fall’s color palette.
