Why Unlocked Backfeeding is Extremely Dangerous
⚡️Lineman Safety: Connecting a generator directly to a standard breaker without a transfer mechanism sends high-voltage electricity back into the utility grid, posing a lethal threat to utility crews working on lines they assume are dead.
⚡️Energized Receptacle (Su***de Plug): If the main breaker and a backfed generator breaker are both ON, power flows backward into the inlet box. This turns the exposed male prongs into live, deadly connection points.
⚡️Equipment Damage: When grid power is restored while an unisolated generator is running, the two out-of-phase power sources clash, which will instantly destroy the generator and likely trip breakers or cause an electrical fire.
An interlock kit is designed specifically to prevent the exact scenario described:
A properly installed interlock uses a sliding mechanical plate that physically blocks the generator breaker from turning ON while the main utility breaker is ON.
Conversely, it forces you to switch the main breaker OFF before you can slide the plate and switch the generator breaker ON.
