Booby Trap Fishing Team Welcome the Official Booby Trap Fishing Team ™ page... Daytime Swordfishing ! Daytime Swordfishing Te We caught numerous sharks that were 800 to 1,200 pounds.

The moment is as fresh in his mind as if it happened last week. Four-year old Brett Holden stands on the dock holding a gleaming kingfish that’s nearly as big as he is. Published in a local newspaper, the photo, submitted by his dad, Don, documented the beginning of a record setting angling career. While much has changed for Holden, now 45, one thing remains unchanged: his enthusiasm for sport fishing runs as deep as the blue waters where the billfish he chases roam.

“I’ve always been fascinated by big fish,” Holden says. “My dad had a boat, so I’ve been fishing since I was born. He (Don) primarily targeted snapper, grouper, kingfish and ling, but he also targeted sharks, so I grew up shark fishing with him. He still makes a couple of trips per year with us.”

Where the Big Fish Live

As owner and captain of the sport fishing juggernaut Booby Trap, a 52-foot, twin-engine 2008 Viking Express based at Surfside Marina that’s capable of hitting 40 knots, Holden (aka “Captain Ahab”) and his crew of talented and intrepid swordfishing anglers have emerged as the premier private sport fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico. The team has been named the top private boat in the Houston Big Game Fishing Club for five straight years mainly on the strength of its ability to reel in an astounding number of elusive, majestic swordfish. And while catching a swordfish is major accomplishment for any angler, bringing one of the bottom-dwelling monsters to the surface during the daytime, a feat the Booby Trap crew has perfected, is even more impressive. boobytrap

Swordfishing the Gulf of Mexico

In June, the Booby Trap crew, comprised of Jeff Wilson, Matt Reed and Travis Joyce, along with guest anglers Brian Barclay and Danny Lenderman, made sport fishing headlines when on its third trip of the season, Barclay hooked a mammoth swordfish that weighed in excess of 500 pounds, crushing the old Gulf of Mexico swordfish or swordfishing record of 341 pounds. The fish was placed in 1,000 pounds of ice and was weighed the next day. By that time, Holden says the fish weighed about 493 pounds, was 108 inches long and had a girth of 60 inches.

“This fish came to the surface and we could see it was hooked pretty deep. It then went back under for three hours. At first, I thought it was a 300 pounder, but the closer it got to the boat I said, ‘It’s a nickel!’ It probably would have been around 550 pounds, but we didn’t weigh it for 27 hours, and by then it had lost an inch in length and four inches in girth,” Holden said. After snagging the massive swordfish, the Booby Trap tracked west in search of blue marlin and caught six wahoo and two blue marlin before calling it a day. Setting World Records

Catching large numbers of huge fish is nothing new for Holden and the Booby Trap. In 2012, the Booby Trap caught 172 swordfish in 41 days of fishing and Holden says that his swordfishing crew has caught over 800 swordfish and 1,000 billfish in the Gulf of Mexico to date. Over its last 45 trips, the crew has caught 218 swordfish and released approximately 20 state record class swords. In 2009, the boat recorded the first “Super Grand Slam”—catching all four of the billfish species, which includes swordfish, blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish, in one day—in the Gulf of Mexico and repeated the feat in 2012. IMG_1119-3

Swordfishing At Its Best! In late June, the prolific boat, owned by Holden since 2008, set a world record when the crew caught 30 swordfish in a single trip, breaking the old record of 21. Of the 30 fish caught, Holden says 23 were estimated to weigh in excess of 200 pounds and five were estimated to weigh at least 300 pounds. As is the custom for the Booby Trap, which releases 95 percent of the fish caught, 26 swordfish were released. The catch and release practice is in keeping with Holden’s overriding belief in preserving the natural resources of the ocean. He says fish badly damaged from the battle to bring them to the boat are usually kept.

“We try to release every fish we can,” Holden says. “We don’t keep fish because of size, we keep them because of the condition that they come to the boat in. Swordfish are good eating fish and we don’t feel bad about putting them in the boat. We just have respect for one of the most incredible fish in the ocean.”

For Holden, the owner of Holden Roofing and a Houston native who lives in Richmond, his rise to the top of the sport fishing game was not an overnight journey. In the 1980s, he began getting hired by boats to assist those crews in finding big fish before he bought his first boat and began entering tournaments.

“Between 1984 and 2000, I won or placed in 50 tournaments and bought bigger boats from the tournament money. In 1986, I was able to afford a boat that could travel out that far (at least 100 miles offshore) and from ’86 through 2008 I mainly targeted blue marlin,” he said. While focusing on catching blue marlin by day, Holden dabbled in catching swordfish at night, as catching the elusive fish that lives in over 1,700 feet of water during the daytime was extremely rare. For over a century, swordfish were caught primarily at night when they ventured up to about 300 feet from the surface to feed. While fishing at night, Holden says a good trip might yield two to four swordfish.

“There was no daytime fishery (for swordfish) here (in the gulf). A group in Florida started catching them during the day, so I knew it could happen here.

“For years we were told that the gulf had been fished out and the swordfish were not there, but I didn’t believe that. We went out numerous times and never caught one

Using squid bait provided by sponsor Bait Masters, along with their recommended rod, the “Get Tight Sucka” series, 80 class reels and up to 6,000 feet of 80-pound, high visibility orange line with strobe lights affixed to the leader, and utilizing sophisticated radar and sonar equipment to see where the fish are living, the Booby Trap has re-written the rules for swordfishing in the gulf.

“The techniques we’re using are different from anybody I’ve ever seen and we’re able to produce double digit swordfish on just about every trip,” Holden says. For the past three years, Holden and company have hosted the Texas Swordfish Seminar at Surfiside Marina, where they reveal their techniques to eager anglers. The seminar benefits the non-profit Everyday Heroes organization, which provides transportation to veterans to and from their doctor’s appointments. Holden says they expected 50 people the first year of the seminar and more than 500 showed up. Over 2,500 people attended the 2013 seminar held in March. To date, the event has raised over $500,000 for the charity.

Well we tried! 🤬🤬🤬
Capt. Shawn tells the story.
“Tried to run her home to Miami and she didn’t make it 20! Back tied up in the slip again!
Just another day of owning a 2025 68 Viking.
Still haven’t heard from Pat Healey. No new response from Justin Healey in weeks. Nothing at all from Viking Yacht Company lately. It seems to me the worse it gets the less they care about doing what’s right. Just my opinion.
Shawn flew in from Miami to meet the crew and run the boat back to Florida now that the engines have been repaired. They made it about 17 miles and had to return to Galveston. These are new issues as we had yesterday.
This is the most disappointing, ridiculous, frustrating, expensive, nightmare we’ve ever had to deal with owning a Sportfishing Boat. Again this is our 3rd Viking. We never had issues like this. I think we had around 6800 hours on one and around 1800 hours on the other before trading them in on this one. Always thought we had good boats and good service. This boat has changed our opinion on the company its self. Not only the boat but the way the company has handled this particular boat and situation. It’s time to make it right Pat Healey. We are patiently waiting on the call…….. take this one back!

Anyone else having Viking Gelcoat issues?
Is your Viking Yacht changing colors?
Ours is! Just add this to the list.

Our 2025 Viking is changing colors in multiple spots. This is just another Viking issue we have been dealing with we figured we would share.
Again this is our 3rd Viking. We couldn’t be more disappointed in this boat and Viking Yacht Company.
We are discussing the idea now of TRYING to get her back to our Home Port in Miami. Captain Shawn is pretty set on giving it a shot.
The last I heard anything from Justin Healey or VIking period was September 23rd No calls, No Text, No Emails since…. No calls from Pat Healey either which is mind blowing imo. All the years of Sportfishing around the world we never thought we would ever have to deal with anything like this.
If you’ve been following our post you know what I’m talking about. This boat was purchased as a NEW BOAT from HMY. It has been a constant battle with repairs since day one. We have been down or in the boat yard more than we have fished.
We thought we were getting somewhere with Viking for a while but that stopped a few weeks ago. We were in discussions of replacing the boat with a new one. Even upgrading, eating expenses and covering additional cost to get us rolling for next season. Even the spec sheet was sent to us. That all stopped!
Fire, flood, Heated Fuel leaks, Teak Deck, Major Engines issues, Multiple oil leaks, Electrical issues ……… now the GELCOAT is changing colors.… WHATS NEXT.
We are going to see how it goes attempting the roughly 1400 mile run home. Stay tuned here as we share our experiences owning a NEW 2025 VIKING 68 We have MORE MAJOR issues to share.
I can’t believe some of the stories we are getting on messenger!
Just sharing our story and opinion.

Let’s talk about quality and teak before I get back into more serious issues with our NEW 2025 68’ Viking Yacht.
Did yall know the entire teak deck was redone.
Yes redone under warranty. The teak deck was sticking up everywhere on the day we went to sea trial the boat as BRAND New. We didn’t think much of it, and the broker guaranteed it would be redone. Which it was, but I wish we would’ve seen the signs.
Hatches and latches all over the cockpit we’re sticking up. They mentioned sanding it down, but that was not happening. It was sticking up so far that they would’ve had sanded it to nothing in my opinion. Anyway, another warranty issue from the start. Here’s a picture of the day we see trialed the boat to get a contract on it.. Here’s a picture of the boat with what the teak looks like now and after it’s been maintained by our crew. Again, this is not one of the major issues we are having the teak has all been redone. But again, I wish I would’ve known that this was just the beginning of our nightmares and what other problems were to come.
Believe it or not the broker said this was not uncommon coming from Viking. That was HMY. He said I’ve got a guy that he takes the Vikings to all the time because they come from a factory like this often. I don’t know if we were just being sold or if that was actually a fact. This is just our story. But what is a fact is that was said. Again it was just the teak deck on the back of the boat that could be replaced so we bit the bullet. The engine oil leaks that were on the boat new were another story. He said we would get them all fixed. As of this past week they’re all fixed. Just now. Again that’s another story. Just thought I would share the teak deck with everyone. This was just the beginning. Stay tuned we have some real issues to discuss y’all might want to hear about we are still dealing with.
Also still no call from Pat Healey. We are considering trying to get the boat back to Florida. We pretty much don’t have a choice imo to get other major issue done.
Just our story and our opinion dealing with purchasing a New Viking Yacht!

Don’t think we are finished telling our story about MORE MAJOR Viking Yacht issues we have had and ARE having! But let’s lighten it up a little!
This is our compass! It doesn’t work! Hasn’t worked since we purchased the boat. Hasn’t been fixed even with our trips to the yard. Not sure what they can do here.
It’s a scrambled mess 🤷🏽‍♂️.
Viking Yacht Representatives we’ve spoken with. “Bring me your boat to our yard” it’s only 1400 miles one way!
Us “We don’t have a compass” drop me a pin! 🤣
Fkn’ ridiculous!
Shawn actually bought a compass with a suction cup mount!

Stay tuned we plan on posting some Viking chit that’s really going to raise some eyebrows!
But it’s our story so we plan on sharing it!

Patiently waiting.

Off to the next Warranty Issue on our New 2025 68 Viking Yacht!

At what temperature does Diesel become dangerous!
At what temperature can it quickly combust and ignite?
On a recent trip we were headed out in our New 2025 68 Viking with a few of our Corporate top sales teams.
The trip was supposed to be a 5 day trip offshore targeting mainly Blue Marlin and Swordfish.
We had an extra 500 gallons of diesel on the back deck which put us at an estimated 3000 gallons of fuel for the long trip. Well we made it about 4 miles out the jetties and alarms started going off! I looked down and it was saying Fuel Heat Issues! The numbers I was reading were mind blowing! It appeared the fuel temperature had reached 290°! Yes you heard that right! When the crew scrambled to the engine room diesel was everywhere! I could hear them yelling and panicking from the bridge. 290° Diesel is crazy hot! The first thing I thought of was we are now a floating BOMB! 3000 gallons of diesel on board and it’s all over the engine room and shooting out of the MTU engine reading 290°! Another panic situation!
Jumping forward with this warranty issue.
This one put us down roughly another month of the season. On top of that the start and stop switches at the helm on the bridge went out! Yep… imagine that. We had to shut the engines down in the engine room! Just another misshap during the situation. We still don’t know what caused the extreme heat at least I don’t. After weeks of waiting on the “correct” repair or what we think might be the correct repair to be completed. We still have the smell of diesel throughout the boat. Our crew spent endless hours trying to reach all the sloshed diesel out of our new 8,000,000.00 + Viking Yacht and still no calls from Pat Healey. A representative from MTU did call and wanted to just replace fuel lines 🤷🏽‍♂️ we knew this was not the issue after discussing it with the mechanics.
They attempted to half a*z the repair by replacing fuel lines 🤷🏽‍♂️. Days and weeks went by. I lost count of sea trials on this one. Each sea trial leaking again and again. . We begged and pleaded for a new fuel pump while talking to MTU. The mechanics agreed it needed one from the start. By the way sea trials were done starting the boat in the engine room since the start stops didn’t work in the fly ridge. Long and the short after weeks down we ended up replacing all the fuel lines, the fuel pump, the start stop switches and we were still fighting the diesel smell when I was at the boat last.
We had just finished an early 1000 hour service since the mechanics were there and waiting on parts on another warranty issue we will talk about later in another post. When we went on our one of the last sea trials for this issue the mechanics checked the oil and the oil level was high. They then informed us that the fuel got SO HOT that it passed through the MTU engine system and diesel was in our oil pan! WTF!
We said we wanted samples taken of the oil. We were told the Mechanics said.. MTU did not think it was necessary. We took it upon our selves at our expense and had the samples pulled and tested. Sure enough our oil was full of diesel! The mechanic also said that the manufacturer said that would be just fine. Just drain the oil. I’m not a mechanic, but I’m still lost there. We had already run the boat on sea trials with diesel in the Oil at this point.
Long and short, this is just one more mishap that cost us a small fortune, even under warranty. We could not get a hold of anybody from Viking during this time we had asked HMY “ our broker” multiple times for a contact number to Pat Healey, or to have him contact us. During this time there was also other warranty issues, but this was the main one at the time.
Do you think that it is safe to take clients family or friends or for the crew to have a boat offshore with 3000 gallons of fuel on it and the fuel heating up to 290°? Again, I’m no mechanic, but that sounds like a floating bomb to me. As of now, I’m not sure that the entire smell is gone. I know the crew has worked endless hours and weeks on that and it was very faint last time I left, but it was still there. Just one more issue added to the list and I am far from finished.
Stay tuned here and follow us with our Viking Yacht Company experiences.
On another not! We burned out one fuel blaster just in sea trials! 🥹

We have some real warranty issues still to go! BIG ONES! Stay tuned!
All our experiences and opinions just sharing.
Again Justin Healey… would you take your wife, kids or family on this boat?
Patiently waiting.

Anyone else had an ELECTRICAL FIRE in their Viking Yacht? 🔥🔥🔥
So on one of our “very few” trips this season we had family, friends and company employees, plus the crew on our new 2025 68 Viking.
We had my son, my friend Jeramie’s Daughter on this particular trip which really caps it off when you think about it. We were over 100 miles offshore when everyone started smelling something burning and panicking. Something was burning but we couldn’t find it at first.
We were marlin fishing so nobody was inside the boat. Everyone was on the bridge or in the cockpit.
I opened the salon door and saw smoke! The breaker box was closed. When we narrowed it down to that area and opened the door that’s when it got scary! There was more smoke pouring out of the panel.
Shawn quickly started to work on getting the situation handled before it got really bad and out of control. Thank God we weren’t sleeping and this happened during the day. This could have been really bad!
Shawn started shutting down breakers and taking the melted parts loose. We never saw this coming. Once again we headed to the dock and fked off another fishing trip.
Being 100 miles out and worried about the boat burning to the waterline is not something we thought we were getting when we purchased a new 68 Viking Yacht.
Now two things that happened after that….
Shawn contacted someone from Viking and told them about the situation and Shawn said the guy told him it was a lack of maintenance. That he should’ve checked to see if all of the wires in the panel were tight after running the boat for a certain amount of time. I’ve never heard such BS in my life. Understand we are way under 1000 hours at this point. And much of that was sea trial time from break downs “not Fishing”.
When I talked to the Viking rep Mark Waldron and told him about this situation as one of our complaints from the multiple issues, he told me to bring the boat to the yard, which is 1400 miles away. So let me get in a boat that just could’ve burned down and run it 1400 miles I ask. I don’t think so. Anyway, long and the short is the Lord was watching over us on this one. This could’ve been bad beyond control.
During some attempted negotiations with Justin Healey, Pat Healey’s son. I asked him multiple times just last week, knowing what you know about all the other issues and this electrical fire issue.
Would you take your wife and kids on this boat 100 miles out?
Would you take your wife and kids on this boat to travel 1400 miles back to your Viking Yard?
Would you go fishing with us yourself?
Zero response each time I ask.
One MTU engine is down today. The mechanics are on it. We are discussing whether we “try” to get the boat back to its home port in Miami or leaving it tied up there in Galveston. The mechanic should be done tomorrow or the next day. I wonder if Pat Healey would like to make that ride with us. Again, this is just one more issue of issues I’ve lost count of. Some of them extremely dangerous and extremely major in my opinion. I’m just getting started here. But I figured Boat electrical wire fire is a reason for concern when traveling or fishing 100 miles offshore.

This is what appeared to be the main source of electrical fire in the breaker box in the pictures.
Again, I’m just slow rolling with this. I have many more major, major issues to share. What really sucks is we ask my son and Jeramie’s daughter if they wanted to go on the next trip and they both said NO.
Can’t really blame them.
Still have not heard anything back from Justin Healey or Pat Healey yet. Nothing but crickets.
Again Justin, if you’re seeing this, let me ask you here in front of everybody for the fifth or sixth time.
Would you take your wife and kids out on this boat?
🤷🏽‍♂️ that’s what I thought!
Patiently waiting for a reasonable solution.
Again, we have done our best to stay away from legal action. We have not hired an attorney. We are hoping Viking Yacht Company steps up and does the right thing here. Again, I thought we were moving forward for a while as a solution and that went to chit and they have literally not contacted us since.
It’s a damn shame that’s the only way we got our first phone calls. Probably won’t get anymore, but I got a lot more to share here. It just gets worse.
This is our third Viking. We really liked the other two Vikings we’ve had in the past. If I would’ve known how this Viking Yacht Company handles chit like this, we would not have bought this one.

Good morning from our new 2025 68 Viking Yacht!
Just another day for us owning a Viking 68.
What a fked up season from start to finish. After all of this we still haven’t heard a word from the owner of nothing new with any satisfactory solution from MTU as well. We’ve had imo nothing but insulting offers of any type of solution. Actually unsafe guidance to what Viking calls solutions imo from Viking representatives them selves.
This is another MTU issue we are dealing with right now tied to the dock in Galveston.
We bought our MTU extended warranty in August, paid over 100,000.00 and this issue is still being worked on from our original NEW BOAT WARRANTY!
One month of the 100k warranty is already gone we just paid for and we are down today from original issues. Basically our new warranty is burning out while we set here working on issues from the day we purchased the boat originally.
We spent most of our original warranty time tied to the dock, limping in or in the boat yard with issues keeping us from making trips. We still have the expenses of a full crew, insurance, slip fees, additional repair fees they didn’t cover. On our way to Galveston from Miami. Shawn had a catastrophic oil leak and had to go into Pensacola. For example. That single warranty issue on our way to Texas probably cost us at least 25-30,000.00 plus the lost of time. That’s expenses the warranty didn’t cover .
We are discussing “Attempting” to make the trip back to Miami. It’s only in discussion right now. We have a lot to think about before making that trip in this boat.
Anyway haven’t heard a word from Viking or MTU and my last few text haven’t been the nicest ones. They definitely show the frustration.
Stay tuned here to follow along as we share our experiences with everyone and voice our opinion with our 2025 Viking 68 and how Viking and MTU handle the situation.
Viking Yachts this has been a nightmare!

09/28/2026

Here we go.. I’ll start with this… My Viking Yacht Owning Experience…😉 buy a brand new 2025 68’ Viking it will be fun they said!
Haven’t heard a reasonable solution from Viking Yacht Company yet. Haven’t heard a word since we got in last trip. We are down now with the other engine down with the turbo repairs.
What should we talk about next?
Got all 120 days of deer season to talk about our Viking Yacht experience now! I’m not running out of content I guarantee that! Yall should have just done this 🖕🏽from the start Viking Yachts.

Flood, Fire, Gelcoat, Engines, Diesel leaks, Electrical, navigational equipment , oil leaks….
Thought for a minute we were getting somewhere. Nothing but Bull Chit!

you out there? 🤷🏽‍♂️
I ask your son Justin Healey if he would take his family and kids out on “THIS” boat and feel safe much less run 1400 miles back to your Viking yard. I asked him that on different days and in different messages. I never got a response on that and I don’t blame him.. but it’s OK for my crew to do it I guess? It’s OK for me to take my family and kids? It sucks this is the only way I can get a phone call.

So what’s y’all’s thought on this awesome plumbing job straight from the factory. First class 🤬
We have more major plumbing issues to share this is just one of our flooded boat stories.

Just one of our recent issues that killed another trip with our new 2025 68 Viking .
This flooded an estimated 300+ gallons of water which shorted out our pump. Lost all fresh water, filled the bilge compartment all the way up to the carpet in the boat. Not what you want to see when over 100 miles offshore in the middle of a trip. No water means, no ice, no showers, no toilets and go home. This is just an example of the workmanship we are seeing on a boat with 8,000,000.00 plus invested in it. Each of the runs we have had issues that sent us home have not just been a lost trip it’s typically a minimal 15,000.00 “just the trip”. Not including travel to our destination, slip, insurance…..
Stay tuned We always share our fishing experiences so here comes our Viking Yacht owning experiences.
We fixed this our selves like most of the other endless issues. Thank goodness the 3 plumbing issues so far were not something more serious and were controllable.
What’s next? 🤷🏽‍♂️
Follow here for our boat owning experiences and conversations. We are learning a lot!
