So a customer was having water backing up from a downspout line. Just one standalone that branches into the main that services the sump pump and air other downspouts. It was the one closest to the curb…
She had a quote for $6500 to rerun those three lines to a new spot at the curb, because a tree protected by the city was right next to the current outlet line. The sidewalk was buckled from the tree roots, and at first glance, it made sense to deduce that the line was broken under the sidewalk.
Lizz arrived for a second opinion. Again, at first glance, she could see why the other contractor arrived at that conclusion. But when she put her camera in the outlet line, it made it all the way to the sump pump. No breaks.
That means it’s only the standalone line. Her camera made it a foot then, boom! Dirt!! There was no way to inspect the 25 feet of line the connected to the Good pipe.
It was proposed and accepted to replace that 25 feet of pipe for $2200.
When Lizz arrived, she dug down to the pipe where it was broken to discover that glue was not used in the fitting and overtime had separated from the pipe, allowing dirt in the line. After cleaning out that section, it was time to inspect the rest of the pipe… And it was perfect. She reset the pipe and fitting with glue, cleaned the rest of the line and re-televised. There was nothing else wrong with this pipe.
The final bill was under $500 with a warranty and guaranteed perfect water flow.
Second opinions are always a good idea.
