Happy happy Turf Tip Friday!

The weather is beautiful! Our lawns rate of growth has slowed slightly, and all is good!

A few tips for everyone this evening:

1.) Get those leaves and other debris picked up. They inhibit sunlight, which effects grass growth. Mulch or bag… your preference!

2.) If you haven’t gotten a pre emergent down, do so now! Proper pre emergent applications will prevent the seeds of w**ds from germinating successfully.

3.) Monitor areas that hold water for fungal related issues. If you suspect a fungal issue, apply a granular or liquid fungacide asap.

4.) Enjoy the time outdoors with the people you enjoy. It’s been a hot summer!

Ready. Set. Goooooo with your pre emergent!

While the weather is quite gloomy, wait for the yard to dry out a bit before applying your pre emergent and before watering it in.

With a 5 day average soil temperature around 72 degrees, here is the window we have been waiting on! Remember to follow the label rates provided with the bag, blow or sweep off concrete surfaces, and water in to establish that protective barrier!

Also, if you have areas that are prone to developing large patch fungus, a preventative app of fungicide is recommended! The fungus is among us!

Happy Turf Tip Saturday!

Fall is in the air. The weather is absolutely perfect. Folks keep asking me, “Dave, what do I do next”!?

Pre emergent. That’s what you need.

Pre emergent products prevent the seeds of w**ds from fully germinating into mature plants, thusly —- no w**ds!

Effective pre emergent applications for the Fall should start when soil temperatures average 70 degrees for a week. Historically, this happens in the lowcountry around the first or second week of October.

Today we delivered to Nexton, Carnes, Canebay, Monks Corner, and North Charleston. Tomorrow we will be delivering to the Summers Corner area.

Our custom 0-0-10 is still (barely) in stock. Secure a bag before we run out. This was a limited custom run. Link to order is in the comments!

Happy Turf Tip Saturday!

As the weather starts to cool down (we will use the word “cool” loosely here 🤣), we need to keep a few things in mind:

1.) Continue to cut as frequently as your time allows. Soil temps are still warm, and with the precipitation we’ve been having, our grass is still growing!

2.) Insect pressures could possibly increase. Get a granular insecticide with the active ingredient “bifentherin” down if you notice any unwanted visitors.

3.) Fungal pressures will be here before we know it. The cooler nights and the humid days are perfect for large patch fungus to cause issues. Scott’s granular fungicide and bayer Bio advanced liquid are both great.

4.) Get your pre emergent product on hand. Pre emergents prevent the seeds of w**ds from successfully growing. Our custom 0-0-10 with Barricade (prodiamine) herbicide is perfect for preventing unwanted winter w**ds. Pre order link is in the comments!

Happy Turf Tip Saturday!

Today’s post is about cut frequency and cut height.

Height of cut, or HOC (for those in the know), is the actually height that you cut your grass at. Some warm season grasses like to be cut short (under 1 inch), while others prefer to be left a little longer. HOC is a personal preference. Always abide by the 1/3 rule —- never cut more than 1/3 of your grass blade off at a time.

Cut frequency refers to how often you mow your grass. When soil temperatures are this warm, it’s not uncommon to cut your gras 2-3 times per week. Generally speaking, the more you cut vertical growth the more you will push horizontal growth (think thicker turf).

There are several factors that also need to be considered, including: fertilizer inputs, water amount, and overall turf health.

Happy Turf Tip Friday!

We are in the dog days of summer, and our lawns still need to be fed!

Mother Nature has been helpful with the abundance of rain lately, but we can’t take our foot off of the preverbal “lawn maintenance” pedal!

If you aren’t happy with your lawn now, start writing down the things you plan on doing next year to improve things. Notate your goals, and how you want to achieve them.

A nice lawn doesn’t happen over night. It takes time, patience, perseverance, and the right arrangement of products.
