Piney Woods Cottage No. 4C. End of Scope: Lazy Morning Light, Summer 2025

This past Summer I completed Willison Timberworks’ part of this build. What a rewarding and satisfying experience.

The morning after, I went back to take some sunrise photos and really liked the shadow of the pine imprinted on the east side; a fitting final stamp of approval for the Piney Woods Cottage No. 4.

Piney Woods Cottage No. 4C. Windows

The bathroom clerestory windows are a modification to the origin design of the cottage, an idea introduced by the clients and a rather nice one I think. The twist however is that I decided to design and build these windows myself with the help of a local millworker. Why not another challenge, right? They are as locally sourced as possible. I am immensely satisfied with them.

Piney Woods Cottage No. 4C. Glazing Installation: Foggy windows on a warm, humid sunrise.

Normally, the glazing is hard to see since the panels are so transparent, but on this morning the windows had some condensation on them and gave quite a cool frosted look with a warm diffused light quality.

Piney Woods Cottage No. 4C. Window Installation:
The crown jewel of the glazed curtain walls.

This full length window is the reason for the namesake of the Piney Woods Cottage. Standing in the living room, a person can see a whole tree from base to crown that is only about 60 feet away.

“We aren’t building a piano”, but we are building instruments attuned to the Gulf Coast environment.

Saturday Sketch 014: Every year I usually send out Christmas cards to family, friends, and clients. For the card I sketch a Christmas chapel as a quick and fun design study of some idea for church building design that I’ve tucked away. This past Christmas I sketched a little design but was frustrated and dissatisfied with the domed cupola since I kept drawing it a bit wonky. So, I did not send this chapel sketch out. But I’ve kept it on display above my desk thus far, maybe just to study it from time to time. I have found that there are some beautiful elements of it that I really like and appreciate. Therefore, I finally decided to share it, at least as a Saturday sketch. I hope you enjoy too, even in its awkward and skewed state.
