Windows are in, and this addition finally feels like rooms.

Marvin windows set all the way around, exterior door hung. The whole thing is dried in, so the inside stays dry no matter what October throws at it. That wall of black framed glass is going to pull a ton of light into the space.

A week ago this was fresh framing. Now it is weather tight and the inside work starts.

Framed and roofed in a week.

This week we put up an addition on an existing home: walls framed, roof sheathed, and shingles going on so it's dried in before the weather turns. The goal with an addition is to make it look like it was always there, so we matched the new rooflines and gables to the existing house instead of just bolting a box onto the side.

Getting a roof over it fast matters. Once it's dried in, the inside stays dry and we can keep moving no matter what October throws at us. That's the difference between a project that stalls and one that stays on schedule.

We're a little proud of this one.

Marine Village School's new science classroom is a 30-foot round yurt, and we got to build it. The local paper even wrote it up (link below). Seeing the space we framed described as "a little sanctuary" for the kids to learn in? That's about the best thing you can hear on this job.

Thank you to everyone at Marine Village School for trusting us with something this special. A round yurt isn't your everyday build, and getting to make it for a school full of curious kids made every angled rafter worth it.

From the first string lines on the ground to that skylight ring at the peak, this has been one of our favorite projects. Can't wait to see the classes that happen under this roof.

This is the part everybody waits for on a yurt.
Every rafter runs from the wall up to one center ring, like spokes on a wheel. They all have to meet that ring at the same angle and the same height, so it's a lot of measuring and a lot of trips up the ladder. When the last one goes in and the circle closes, the whole roof holds itself together.
Behind the rafters you can see the lattice wall that gives a yurt its shape, and that ring at the top is where the skylight goes. Standing under it and looking straight up is really something.

Wrapped up a custom cabinet job this week, all built in white oak.
The lower level got a full wet bar: coffee station, sink, and drawers on both sides, with a dark stone top that sets off the oak grain. Down the hall, a matching vanity carries the same wood and the same black hardware, so the whole level reads like one space instead of a few rooms that happen to be near each other.
White oak's our kind of material. It's tough, the grain has character, and it takes a natural finish well so it looks like real wood instead of a catalog. Custom means it fits the room it's in, down to the drawer that lands right where you want it.

The floor's done, and there's the circle.

Thirty feet of decking, cut and fit all the way around to a true round edge. This is where round gets tricky. Every board on the outside has to be trimmed to the curve, so it's slow, one plank at a time. The pile of offcuts in the grass tells the story.

Underneath it all is the insulation, hardware cloth, and weather barrier we put in last week, so this floor is sealed up and ready for a Minnesota winter. Next up: the walls start going up.
