Main Street Parks

Main Street Parks Residents & visitors can re-imagine what the downtown urban landscape could look like from the point of view of a parking spot.

A handful of parking spots will be turned into temporary public parks / parklets for all to sit, socialize, and have fun!

What a creative way to use a parking spot!

What a creative way to use a parking spot!

WePark shows that in cities like San Francisco, coworking is unaffordable to many, and the sheer volume of free space allocated to parked cars could be put to much better use.

Did you hear the good news? Less than a week ago, Stevens Point just passed a new parklet ordinance! Starting this year, downtown and southside businesses/orgs/owners can develop a parklet to provide more outdoor space to sit, socialize, and enjoy the street life ... (photo by Willdmay)

Very cool... The local press picked up the progress of parklets in Stevens Point!

By Joe Bachman Editor STEVENS POINT — City officials further discussed the possibilities of parklets in the downtown area on Monday night. Hi Main Street Parks followers,
The updated draft parklet ordinance is on the agenda for further discussion at the next City Plan Commission meeting (7th Jan., 6pm, at the Police Dept.)

It looks like a lot of local businesses' and residents' feedback has further shaped this latest draft version, which is great!

This next meeting is another chance to provide feedback and ideas.

Here's that agenda (it's item 10 and on pages 109-120):

Hello friends of Main Street Parks, we have some unfortunate news... We have decided to postpone this year's event. It's not in the cards this time around and I apologize for any disappointment. With this as a volunteer-led event and as the primary coordinator, I need to switch gears and bear down at my day job! I will still continue to assist businesses and City staff/officials in developing a fruitful yet modest parklet ordinance for Stevens Point and hopefully we can realize a final draft approved by City Council this winter. :)

Let's plan to run the next Main Street Parks event in spring or fall of 2019! Enjoy the rest of your summer and thanks for your prior support, -Trevor

Coming up soon... Some good discussion on the potential parklet program for Stevens Point. Open to the public...

Join the conversation about parklets!

On Thursday, April 26th at 6 PM, Mayor Wiza is holding a public information meeting at the IDEA Center (1039 Ellis St). The conversation will provide information about a proposed Parklet Program in the city as well as get feedback from residents, business owners, and users. The public is welcome so mark your calendars!

Parklet Defined: A parklet is a parking space or spaces temporarily/seasonally converted to a public park to provide amenities such as seating, tables, green space, bike parking, or a mix of these things for public/customer use.

Another wonderful day on the streets of downtown Stevens Point. We had lots of participation and curiosity in our little event. Our Xtreme Pedestrian Xing event was a fun success with some interesting and fun-to-watch performances by kids and adults (who thought they were kids again). Thanks to everyone that participated and hung out! A special thanks goes out to our partners: UWSP Adventure Tours, Create Portage County, & Golden Sands Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc.; the supporting businesses: PABS Point Area Bicycle Service, Q Artists Cooperative (especially Dan Sivek & Kristie Frassinelli Cecil for painting at the Plein Air), Central Wisconsin Children's Museum (CWCM), Kindred Spirit Books & Tech Lounge, LLC, Portage County Public Library, Graffiti's Sports Pub, and Diversi-Tea LLC, and of course our worker bees and volunteers: Alex Van Dreel, Sarah Van Dreel, Amy Schmied, Trisha Steinhorst, Johnny Pabs, Eva Donohoo, and Marti & Greg (for watching the kids)... Until next year...
