The Best Ways to Correct Patio & Walkway Problems

No matter how carefully constructed they are, walkways and patios are built on the earth which shifts and moves with changes in temperature and moisture over time. Hardscapes need consistent proactive maintenance just as your garden beds do.
https://bit.ly/3jVxyN4

Patios and walkways are essential components of a beautiful, functional landscape. They provide both aesthetic value and a gathering place for families to enjoy the outdoors. But after regular exposure to the elements, patios and walkways will begin to deteriorate. Brick and stone surfaces may becom...

In July, we began installation on the first of two rooftop terraces at The Boros in Tysons Corner. (Scroll back to our June 24 update to see original 3D concepts by Eric Venclik.)

Last week, our crew completed laying the white Turkish marble deck. The large white containers are filled with Natchez Crape Myrtle. Once the trees mature, we expect them to frame views through the terrace and on toward distant points.

The sunken beds are packed with Mondo grass which will become a green carpet when the plants mature.

The Rose of Sharon (hibiscus syriacus) is one of those classic garden plants (think lilac, boxwood, etc) that never go out of style. Over the past ten years, a new crop of hybrids has expanded the color palette of this popular shrub beyond the traditional pale pink and white. Also, the new cultivars produce double petal blossoms.

Shown here are hybrids Blue Chiffon, Lucy and Ardens. Hibiscus can be featured as a stand alone shrub or, planted in rows, and pruned into a spectacularly showy hedge.

Our company president, Barry Schneider discusses pruning details with Surrounds Garden Management crew leader Miguel Venancio. Miguel and his crew have cared for this amazing specimen of Hibiscus Syriacus (a.k.a. Rose of Sharon) for many years. Although some consider this traditional garden plant "old-fashioned", it's a winner when you consider that it is drought resistant, low maintenance, and seems to be perfectly happy just showing off its plentiful trumpet-shaped blossoms. It blooms all summer long until the first frost! And besides the traditional white or pale pink hibiscus, you can find hybrids in a wider range of colors at nurseries like Waverly Farm.

We are just about to begin construction on the second of two roof top terraces we have going on the penthouse level of the new Verse building in the Boro’s development at Tyson’s Corner.

Landscape architect Eric Venclik strategically positioned planting beds and containers to define areas for a dining room, outdoor kitchen , fire pit, and sunset view terrace.

This penthouse has a sweet corner location overlooking Washington DC to the east and Shenandoah National Park to the West.

In front yard landscape design, curb appeal begins at the end of your driveway and continues all the way to the front door of your home. This substantive stone entry gateway, designed by Howard Cohen, creates an impressive arrival experience. Most landscapes need to be updated about every ten to fifteen years. The key to success here is to work from a comprehensive design and maintenance program that pulls everything together and ensures the longevity of your landscaping efforts. Sure, you can go about the process with an ala carte approach. But without a plan, it’s easy to end up where you started and have to repeat the process sooner than you might like.

We’ve just begun work on a private rooftop terrace for a penthouse in the new Verse building at The Boros Tysons Corner. Surrounds landscape architect Eric Venclik created an outdoor living environment that brings the style of the interior space through to the outdoor terrace. The design employs planting beds and large container plantings to delineate multiple outdoor rooms that include a private dining area, fire pit, and outdoor kitchen and bar.

Even during the era of COVID, we’re designing and installing projects - SAFELY.

Project manager, Oscar Cruz and his team are setting boulders to create a threshold in the driveway of a private residence in Potomac, MD.

The raw, organic character of the boulders play off the western style architecture of the house. Selected native shrubs and perennials will fill in around them to evoke the look and feel of plant material used in western landscapes.

Landscape Design Elements That Improve Front Yard Privacy

The desire for privacy in a backyard landscape is a given. It is also a necessary element of front yard landscape design.
