You never know what you’ll find when you cut open a ceiling to fix a problem, you may just find another. This piercing valve for a refrigerator was covered with drywall. The type of plastic line that’s connected to it is notorious for breaking with age. Can you just imagine the panic that there would be if that water line broke?

Here’s one difference between a building maintenance person and a plumber. The plumber knew that the retainer should have been locked in place to avoid flooding a local business office. Luckily we were called to fix a running toilet and avoided that disaster for the client. The fill valve was working its was up and off the lower part. If it would have made it a few more inches, a full stream of water would have pushed the tank lid off and flooded the space. Imagine if that had happened when no one was there...

Thought provoking... You can only imagine how many "safety" issues there can be in the Plumbing, Heating and A/C and Electrical trades and the plethora of safety meetings and precautions made. Be careful out there.

S.W.E.A.T. #6

Historically, #6 has generated more conversation than any other tenet of the pledge, and more controversy than all the others combined. Why? Because the notion of personal responsibility has become politicized, especially with regard to assigning blame.

Today, many people feel that telling an employee that "their safety is their responsibility," somehow lets the employer off the hook whenever accidents occur. This argument however, misses the point. The point is not to figure out who's responsible in the wake of an accident. The point is to not have an accident in the first place. And that requires workers to understand a very simple truth; just because you're in compliance, doesn't mean you're out of danger.

On a personal level, I'm mindful that many of the scholarships I offer lead to jobs where risk is a reality. This tenet is an integral part of the pledge because frankly, I don't want to train individuals who believe their safety is someone else's responsibiity. Because those people often get hurt.

Give this video a look, and share it if you're on board. And if you or someone you know wants to learn a skill that's in demand, apply for a work ethic scholarship today. mikeroweWORKS.org/scholarship.

And be careful out there...

Seems easy enough to replace this faucet but once you look underneath to find how it mounts, there seems to be nothing there to take loose. This is where knowledge and experience comes in play. This faucet has a special mounting sequence that involves a long Allen wrench and a couple of hidden clips.

We recently were called to fix a couple toilets at a local church. The main water needed to be turned off to complete the repair. During that process the 30 plus year old valve began to leak around the handle. The 2” valve had to be replaced immediately since the leak could not be stopped any other way. This just shows that you just never know when a simple repair can turn into a bigger job.

We were called out for a leaking washer pan and found this with the plastic pan. The rubber gasket was on the wrong side of the pan and the hole was too large. A new custom metal pan and a correctly installed gasket will give this homeowner some peace of mind.

Mayhem

I guess you could have good homeowners insurance and try to fix it yourself or call a pro and take the worry out of the problem all together.

I’m Chris with a tale of power tools and property damage. See if it airs on the National Championship Game 1/11.

Even the best materials installed improperly fail. Once again we find a compression valve installed on CPVC with a brass ferrule instead of a plastic ferrule. The brass ferrule is easily overnighted and with some time the pipe cracks. Then it leaks. It’s a relatively easy fix but the damage to the ceiling below won’t be.

Slow sink drain? Maybe it wasn’t installed correctly, then we see this. The pics are of the same lavatory drain that were installed using the wrong parts. Yes, it may work when first done but after time the incorrect 90 will stop up and be impossible to get a snake through. It’s intended for a vent in the drainage system where dirty water will never travel or need to be snaked.

Wow this water pressure is way too high. Perfect for the fire sprinklers but bad for everything else in the house. High water pressure can cause noisy toilets, water hammer from fast closing valves and damage rubber washers and cartridges in fixtures. We installed a pressure reducing valve and were able to get the pressure to a normal level.

This client’s complaint was “hot water was too hot and there is a weird smell coming from the water heater”. They turned it off and we found this. The lower thermostat had stuck on and melted down. Burned a hole right through it. Just a couple new thermostats and new piece of wire and it’s back in order and heating water properly.

Plumbing may be relatively straight forward but there are little subtitle differences between good and bad parts. This flapper was newly installed by a handy homeowner that was still frustrated by a running toilet. After a closer examination we found that the new part was bad.

Accidents happen and things go where they shouldn’t go. This object was dropped “accidentally” in this toilet by a very active toddler and then flushed. Luckily, it didn’t go very far (just out of sight) and a very aware mother knew something was wrong and called Dynamic. We were able to see it in the passage way with one of our flexible cameras and fish it out.

We were recently asked to complete a bathroom that was partially roughed in by a previous owner. We broke open the floor where the tub drain “should” have been and found nothing. We then opened the wall and found this open drain inside the wall. Things like this cause weird, unexplainable odors that are hard to track down.

Recently changed an inoperative sub meter in a commercial property. We added a check valve to prevent the meter from running backwards. Pressure drops in commercial properties can cause this but the check valve stops it. Also prevents cross contamination from back flow from adjacent spaces.

One of the first things Dynamic does when replacing a sump pump is clean the pit. A lot of debris can collect over the years and can shorten the life of the pump. This client went with a dual pump setup. This provides dependability and peace of mind for years to come.

Sometimes it’s more than just a capacitor like the internet searches lead you to believe. This unit wouldn’t start when we arrived. Yes the capacitor was bad but the potential relay and start capacitor were bad also. We’re not saying this is always the case but sometimes it’s worth calling a professional.
