People often ask “What would you do?”. That’s a difficult question to answer since this is what I do. I personally like all the bells and whistles so here’s what I have at my own home. It’s an 80% gas furnace (only because putting in a higher efficiency furnace would have meant running a new vent pipe and cutting a lot of drywall to do so). Sitting on top of the furnace is a micro channel coil with a TXV combined with a 20 SEER condensing unit. Then there’s an Aprilaire fan powered humidifier controlled by the Honeywell IAQ equipment interface module. Then the whole system is separated into 2 zones via the Honeywell Zone control system with 2 powered dampers. This also has a powered damper to control fresh air into the home and a barometric bypass damper for when only one zone is working to “dump” excess pressure back into the furnace and lessen duct noise. Lastly, we have a UV light in the return to reduce germs in the air in front of the Aprilaire right angle media filter. All of this is monitored by 2 safety switches, one in the secondary pan and one on the condensate trap, and a Honeywell rope sensor that has WiFi access for notifications. We can control and change settings from anywhere we have internet access via the Honeywell control. The thermostat on the main floor controls that zone while we have wireless sensors on the upper level to average temps between the bedrooms for ultimate comfort.
