Time is moving fast. I’ve been out of the news business having retired from Fox Two News a year and a half ago, , and this time has actually moved quickly.
I had no clue that it was going to be as busy and active as it has proven to be. I’ve really been able to get involved with doing a lot of things and helping a number of people
I’ve had a chance to get more involved with people who are homeless and people in need ,and that for me has really been a calling by God on my life.
I’m still getting up at about six in the morning because I have so many things scheduled for the course of the day and sometimes the day doesn’t end until the evening. Things continue to come up, new stories continue to come up, or new developments on the stories that I’m covering.
I feel actually just as active and even more so than when I was working for Fox two News. I think I’m running more and actually covering more stuff because I get to decide what I’m going to cover and I get to say everything that I wanna say the way that I wanna say it.
The good thing is that there’s no boss for people to call. I have of course had people who didn’t like a position I took or what I had to say, and that includes political officials. Now there is no boss for them to call to modify what I’m doing or reel me back in.
That’s something I absolutely love. it’s caught some people I think by surprise. I’ll get people who will not like some of the positions that I take, there be some people who say I should stick to covering the homeless and North St. Louis and not get involved in issues like national issues or international issues or politics and stuff like that.
But I remind them that I was in the news business for 45 years in which I covered some national stories and international stories. Certainly when I anchored, I had to grapple and deal with those issues. I remind them that I have a degree in political science from Cornell University an Ivy League school. I tell folks I am as qualified as anybody to talk about national issues or international issues.
I also explained to people that I’m not a reporter in the sense that I was on Fox 2 where I have to give equal weight to both sides. I’m more an influencer now, a social media influencer now with 207,000 followers where I get to give my opinions on issues , and I get to say what I think and of course, a lot of people are not necessarily going to like that.
I remind people once again in case people don’t know that I’m not with any political party. I get criticized from the left and the right so I think that’s a good thing.
I have Republicans calling me an ultra liberal, and some liberals calling me Maga. But I’m not advocating either one. I look at the issues and decide what I feel about it and that’s the position that I take.
But I wasn’t married to anybody’s party Democrat or Republican during my 45 years of Fox 2.
And I’m not married to any party now.
I didn’t pick the people I was going after based on whether they were a democrat or republican,or black or white or gay or straight or a man or a woman. I didn’t base it on their ethnicity or nationality or religious preference. I looked at the issue and decided from that the stories that I was going to do.
That’s why I lasted for 45 years and that’s why my You Paid For It Franchise had solid backing from the community because I really did not take sides.
Right now people get mad at me because I don’t tow the Democratic Party line. That’s not what I do, but I don’t tow the Republican Party line either.
Again I look at the issues and then decide what I think is right and like a umpire I’ll make a call. Usually I’m right, sometimes I may be wrong. There will be people who don’t like what I’m saying but that’s OK.
So retirement really has been great for me. It has really been an adventure. It has really been something where I feel that I’m able to make a difference.
What I tell people is that what I like most about retirement is I’ve gotten to know Jesus Christ so much better. I formed a relationship with Jesus Christ and and I know him like I’ve never known him before in my life and so he truly is the Lord of my life.
Jesus means so much more to me than he did when I was in the hustle and bustle and rat race of working. Now I get to take time each and every day and start off the day with God and then push forward in the day. My life so much more fulfilling and that has made it more meaningful.
And so I’m able to put everything about this life and perspective. I’ve also gotten to spend more time talking to my daughter Ava and granddaughter Rose. and I’m just so blessed to have Ava, Rose and son-in-law John in my life.
We talk every day and I love that so much and even at this age I’m getting to know so much more about her and so God truly blessed me when he gave me the family that is truly a blessing in retirement.
So looking at this year and a half that’s gone by I can just truthfully say I really am living my best life with God calling the shots.!!!!
