What does that crack mean?

A stair-step crack is a clue, not a diagnosis. It can point to movement, settlement, or a joint that is failing. The wall gives you more information when you look at the whole thing.

Document where the crack starts, what it crosses, and whether you see leaning, bulging, damaged brick, or open joints. Schedule an evaluation when the crack is growing, appears with movement, or needs to be read in context.

Before you accept a tuckpointing bid, ask one question:

What type of mortar will you use, and why does it fit this brick?

The right answer depends on the masonry in front of you. A hard mortar is not automatically a better mortar, especially on older, softer brick. Ask what was observed, what is being proposed, and how the choice protects the brick.

Can painting brick hide the clue you need to see?

Paint can make it harder to read the brick face, joints, moisture marks, and previous repairs. Before changing the surface, understand what the masonry is telling you.

If the wall is already painted, document the areas that are cracking, peeling, or staying damp. Call 314-775-4557 or visit [anchormasonry.com](https://anchormasonry.com).

Why is the lowest visible joint not always the whole water problem?

Water can enter above the area you notice, move through the wall, and leave a mark somewhere else. Follow the pattern instead of treating the darkest spot as the source.

Photograph the full path and call 314-775-4557 or visit [anchormasonry.com](https://anchormasonry.com).

Does a new mortar color prove the repair is wrong?

No. Color can vary while the more important questions are preparation, compatibility, joint profile, and how the repair meets the existing masonry.

Ask what was matched and why. Call 314-775-4557 or start at [anchormasonry.com](https://anchormasonry.com).

A before-and-after only helps if the views actually match.

Use the same wall section, from the same angle, before and after the repair. Mark the failed joint. Then ask the useful question: did the repair fit the brick, or did it simply cover the problem?

The tool matters. So does the hand using it.

Removing damaged mortar takes control. Too shallow, and the failing material stays in place. Too aggressive, and sound brick can take the hit. The work should match the wall, not force the wall to match the tool.

A trowel leaves a record.

You can see how mortar is being placed, how the joint is being shaped, and whether the repair is being treated like a wall or like a flat picture.

Good masonry work is controlled from the first pass to the last clean-up.

Next time you see a repair, look at the joints, not only the brick faces.

The tool matters. So does the hand using it.

Removing damaged mortar takes control. Too shallow, and the failing material stays in place. Too aggressive, and sound brick can take the hit.

A careful repair starts with reading the joint, the brick, and the wall around it.

Fresh mortar is not the same thing as a finished repair.

The joint has to be prepared properly, filled to the right depth, and shaped to work with the surrounding masonry.

The clean line people notice at the end comes from decisions made before the new mortar ever goes in.

Ask your next bidder how they prepare the joint.
