Although bloom season is coming to an end for our front yard low profile prairie, the shop has been full of life! Shots from earlier this summer show a beautiful sea of yellow Rudbeckia. We couldn’t resist bringing some of that life inside to our table.

We recently received the kindest card from a lovely neighbor, words like these are what keep our passions alive!

Whatever you call it tree lawn, hellstrip, parkway, devil strip, boulevard, curb strip, sidewalk buffer… it’s difficult for plants to grow here. The soil is dry, highly compacted, intoxicated with road salt and dog p*e, and walked/driven over. But at the same time, it’s an incredible, often forgotten, opportunity to add native plants. The result is lower maintenance and more beauty at the most visible edge of your property.

We’ve loved using Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) because it rapidly fills in the space, stays short, and is contained by the concrete on all sides. The fruits are great too, but we would not recommend eating them when planted here. These plants perform exceptionally well in the St. Louis area.

St. Louis City has new guidelines related to the permitted height of plants in the tree lawn. Board Bill 78 was passed this past winter which limits vegetation in the tree lawn to a height of 24 inches. Vegetation within a 4 feet radius of a fire hydrant should not exceed 7 inches, and all public right-of-ways and carriage walks should be clear.

It is important to understand what your local ordinances are so you know you are complying with code. This is why we recommend Wild Strawberry because it is a native plant that stays short and will perform well in this harsh environment.

Wowza — this garden knocks our socks off! 🌿✨ Kudos to

Planning for this project began back in May 2024 with the goal of receiving an MSD Rainscaping Small Grant to transform this steep, lawn-covered hillside into a thriving pollinator paradise.

With design help from .l.ross and plants provided by .stl, that dream became a reality. Now, one year after planting, we are absolutely blown away by the transformation.

The beauty and impact of native plants on our community is undeniable — buzzing with pollinators, alive with color, and managing stormwater naturally. 💚🐝🦋

Every Spring and Fall we volunteer with Trash For Trees to plant native trees and shrubs for St. Louis City residents. The program focuses on picking up trash in city neighborhoods, and then working with collaborative partners to plant trees. This group can be found on Facebook, where they communicate with neighborhoods and residents to coordinate their efforts. You can get involved by checking out their page or website.

Join in for a webinar presented by Landscape Designer, Allegra Pierce. THIS Wednesday March 25th at 2:00 pm. Part of the Partners for Native Landscaping Virtual Program hosted by The St. Louis County Library

Installing a new garden on a slope presents several challenges, including erosion, root stabilization, and accessibility. Front yards offer the greatest opportunity for native plant education and outreach, yet they are often sloped. In this webinar, learn new strategies to make gardening on a hillside not only possible, but attractive and long-lasting.

Here is our shop! We work out of a small house in South City. We’re not open to the public, so we’re sharing this with you here. This is our home base. We knew we needed to transform the front landscape from lawn to a vibrant native seeded garden. We have since added a rain garden, a curving retaining wall, and a small patio. Seeded in early 2025, these were the results. We’re excited to watch the evolution of our small-scale, city front yard trial seeded landscape from our window. Stay tuned for updates!
