TYS will be doing another round of interviews to find someone to finish off the season with us!

A couple things to add:
-this position does require the applicant to have a vehicle. Tools need to be transported to and from work sites. A small car will work but the bus won't, unfortunately.
-this position will be seasonal, but if youre also into cleaning, we may have a position for you in our housekeeping department to help see you through the winter.

We are looking for another landscaper. This position will start at 10-15 hours and grow as our business does. By mid summer our new employee should be getting 32 hours a week until late fall. We wanna be clear this is a position that has great potential for growth, but we cant increase our work load until we are sure we have someone to take on the extra hours. If youre looking to reduce hours at another job and/or transfer out of a different field, we may be an awesome fit for you!

One thing we are looking for in our new team member is an ability to work with Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia. This plant shows up a lot in the landscapes we work on. It doesnt affect as many people as poison ivy does, but some folks have severe reactions. If thats you, or could be you, this might not be the position for you. But if you've handled the plant before and know you dont have a bad reaction, we wanna talk! Contact us for an interview.

Garden Sundries Day

Not every important thing in a garden is a living plant. From hardscapes and tools to water features and bird feeders, Garden Sundries Day highlights something in our gardens that isnt specifically a growing plant.

Ponds are one of my favorite additions to a garden. Water features of any kind can really elevate your atmosphere and increase your biodiversity but ponds can do so on a level fountains and bird baths really can't. Depending on size and location, ponds can encourage amphibians like frogs and salamanders, dragonflies, birds, and small mammals will appreciate a place to get a drink in the heat of summer.

Ponds can be a lot of different sizes, even in large bowls or tubs on your patio. They are most effective with plenty of plants and no fish (there are some situations where fish are a good addition but not for most backyard ponds). Adding mosquito bits and/or a small fountain will keep mosquitoes from breeding. They dont like moving water.

TYS Full Designs differ from Quick Designs in that they are more detailed and fine tuned. A landscape specialist comes out for a site survey to carefully access the conditions so we can choose plants that will thrive in them. We do multiple consultations with each client to be sure we are planning them the best space for their family.

Quick Designs are a wonderful choice for many people, but if you need something a bit more precise and researched, Full Designs are the way to go. I only take 1-2 of these at a time! Message me asap to get yours going so you can enjoy the new space as soon as this summer!

Here are some different parts of my previous designs.

We offer budget friendly "Quick Designs" and have a few openings for this service in the coming weeks.

If you're able to provide approximate measurements and site conditions, this is an excellent, affordable alternative to the full fledged professional designs we offer.

Clients who have recieved a quick design from us will also recieve a discount on a future professional design that includes all or part of the area covered in the quick design.

Your outside space should be as enjoyable and comfortable as your inside space. Let us help you get it there!

INVASIVE! BEWARE!

I usually share lovely native plants and even some non native plants that behave themselves. But every now and then I want to throw in a warning for various invasive species. These should not be purchased or planted in our area and should be removed and safely disposed of when possible.

Bush honeysuckle
Lonicera maackii

I understand why folks struggle to part with this one. It holds some nostalgia for me as well, the first plant I ever foraged for "food" and a scent to send me sprialing backwards through childhood memories.

I know what bad news they are though. The leaf out early and they shade out, choke, and poison other plants (allelopathic). Their berries hold little nutritional value for wildlife but are appealing to birds who will spread them far and wide. They're taking over our woodlands and it can be tricky to remove them all in wooded environments.

You can help by replacing any you have on your property with native shrubs or trees and encourage your neighbors to do the same. I can do brief text consultations about removing them and choosing replacements for free; or we can schedule a longer consultation if you'd like more guidance and support.

Information gathered over a long bitter fight with honeysuckle over the years.

Some plants may be invasive here, but native to where you live, or vice versa. Some non natives may behave well here but be invasive where you are. Always double check regional plant information before adding or removing from your landscapes!

NATIVE PLANT SPOTLIGHT
Cercis canadensis
Eastern redbud

These are my FAVORITE trees (aesthetically. Oaks are more beneficial to wildlife but...) Gosh do redbuds POP. Dreary long winters give way to more sun and warming temps and the redbuds respond by producing hundreds of tiny purple flower buds as if throwing confetti across cities and forests alike. The color of both the flowers and leaves can be different with different cultivars but they are all beautiful.

The flowers/flower buds are edible and make any dish look kinda fancy. I put them in salads and omelets, on sandwiches and cakes, anything I can think of.

The trees tend to thrive on the edges of woodlands and roadsides. Some shade is helpful in their early years, but they can tolerate all kinds of light conditions. The reseed readily so plant somewhere you can easily mow around or be prepared to pull volunteers regularly. They get around 30 feet tall with a similar spread. They're heartshaped leaves have a yellow fall color but these trees shine brightest in the spring. Like, right now!
