🌿 What Are Your Outdoor Plants Really Doing at Night? 🌙
As a landscaper, I love sharing these hidden nighttime secrets with my clients! While we’re sleeping, the entire plant world shifts into a different mode:
• Photosynthesis stops without sunlight, so plants switch to respiration — gently taking in oxygen and releasing small amounts of CO₂ (just like us).
• Many plants practice nyctinasty — folding their leaves, closing flowers, or drooping stems like they’re tucking themselves in for the night 🛌
• Outdoor plants get busy in other ways: night-blooming flowers (like moonflower, evening primrose, and night-blooming jasmine) open up and release strong fragrances to attract moths and other nocturnal pollinators.
• Trees and shrubs continue important work — roots keep growing, energy is redirected for new shoots and repairs, and they help regulate temperature and moisture in your landscape.
• Some release compounds that support beneficial insects and soil life even after dark.
Don’t forget your indoor plants! Snake plants, peace lilies, aloe, and others are still quietly improving your home’s air quality at night.
Whether it’s a backyard garden, a commercial landscape, or your potted patio plants — nature never truly rests. It just works in beautiful, quiet ways while we sleep.
