In 2024, wind and solar generated more electricity in the U.S. than coal for the first time on record. Renewables produced about 17% of U.S. power, while coal fell to 15%, according to U.S. Energy Information data analyzed by Ember.
In Missouri, coal is still part of the mix, but nearly all new generation growth is solar and wind. Statewide solar capacity has more than tripled since 2018, with additional projects already approved and under construction.
Here in the St. Louis region, the grid is slowly shifting away from fuel that has to be burned and toward energy that is produced every day without it.
