🌧️ Before the Siding Goes On...

When you look at a finished house, it's easy to think: "Walls. Siding. Done." But there's another important layer underneath that siding.
Before the exterior gets finished, the house is wrapped in a weather-resistant barrier. Its job is to help protect the structure from liquid water while allowing water v***r to escape.
Then comes the siding. The front and back porches get build. Trim get put on. Then the whole thing gets painted.
That's probably one of our favorite parts of a build like this. For months, you're looking at framing, foam, concrete, lumber, ladders, tools, dirt, and construction materials. Then suddenly you step back and realize: "Whoa. That's a house."

We've been working on this one for quite a while, and there's still plenty more to come.

🪟 How Do You Put Windows & Doors Into a Concrete Wall?

Another question we've heard: "If the exterior walls are concrete, how do you put the windows and doors in?"
The answer starts before the concrete ever gets poured.
The openings for the windows and doors are framed into the ICF walls during construction. That means we're not waiting until later to figure out where everything goes. The openings are planned and built into the wall system from the beginning.
Once we're ready for installation, the windows and doors can be brought in from the outside, positioned into their openings, and secured in place.
It's one of those details that seems simple when you're looking at the finished house...but there's a LOT of planning that takes place before that window even arrives to the job site. 👀

👀 What's Actually Inside an ICF Wall?

You've seen us build the walls. You've seen the concrete go in. You've seen the house start taking shape.
But what would you actually see if you could cut one of these walls in half?

From the outside in:

Siding -> Weather-resistant barrier -> Insulating foam ->Concrete + reinforced steel ->Insulating foam ->Drywall

That's the basic sandwich.
The concrete provides the structural strength, while the foam provides insulation on both sides.
And because the ICF forms have built-in furring strips, the drywall has a secure place to attach.
It's pretty cool to think about how much is happening inside a wall that eventually just looks like... a wall.

Most of the work in building a house eventually gets covered up.

⚡ How Do You Run Electrical Through a Concrete House?

Here's one of the questions we get when people hear that the exterior walls of this house are made with ICF:

"So... how do you run the electrical?"

Good question!

Remember those layers of insulating foam on either side of the concrete?

That's where the magic happens.

A hot-wire foam cutter is used to melt channels into the foam.

The electrical wiring can then sit neatly inside those channels, tucked into the wall system and out of the way of the drywall.

Once the electrical and plumbing are where they need to be, the walls can start getting closed in.

And here's another interesting part:

The drywall can be attached directly to the ICF using the built-in furring strips.

No traditional exterior wall framing required.

It's one of those things you don't really think about until someone asks:

"Okay... but how does that actually work?" 😂
