See that shingle lifting up? Yeah... it's not supposed to do that.

A lifted shingle might not look like a big deal, but when the wind gets underneath it, things can go downhill pretty quickly.

High winds can loosen shingles even more or tear them off completely, leaving your roof more vulnerable to water damage.

And with Central Illinois heading into colder weather, now isn't the time to ignore it.

Does one lifted shingle mean you need a whole new roof? **Absolutely not.**

But it does mean it's worth having someone take a look before a small repair turns into a bigger problem.

Gutter guards are great. Until you forget you still have gutters.

A lot of homeowners think installing gutter guards means they'll never have to worry about cleaning their gutters again.

Not exactly.

Gutter guards help keep leaves and larger debris out, but dirt, smaller debris, and leaves can still collect on top of them or work their way through.

And when water can't flow where it's supposed to, you've got a problem.

Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow, potentially damaging your fascia, siding, foundation, and even contributing to roof problems.

**The bottom line? Gutter guards reduce maintenance. They don't eliminate it.**

Take a look at your gutters a couple times a year, especially after the leaves start falling.

**After a bad storm, don’t just look for missing shingles.**

Roof damage isn’t always that obvious.

High winds can lift or loosen shingles without completely removing them. Hail can damage the surface of a shingle. Flashing, vents and other roof components can take damage too.

If something looks off, or you’re just not sure, have it checked.

Catching damage early is a whole lot easier than finding it because water started dripping from the ceiling.

The cheapest roofing bid isn’t always the cheapest roof.

I understand comparing prices. You should.

But make sure you’re comparing the same job.

What materials are being used?
What’s being replaced?
What happens if bad decking is found?
What kind of ventilation is included?
Who is actually doing the work?
And what happens if there’s a problem six months later?

A lower number upfront doesn’t mean much if you have to pay somebody else to fix it later.

Ask questions.

A good roofer won’t have a problem answering them.

**Central Illinois is giving us one last taste of nice weather before the cold moves in.**

While you're enjoying these last few warm days, take a minute to look at your roof and gutters.

Loose shingles, clogged gutters, and small leaks aren't going to fix themselves over the winter.

And trust us, finding out you have a roof problem when it's 20 degrees outside isn't anybody's idea of a good time.

Trees are great.

Branches rubbing against your roof? Not so much.

Keep limbs trimmed back far enough that they aren’t scraping the shingles or hanging directly over the house.

That helps prevent shingle damage, keeps debris off the roof and lowers the chance of a branch coming through your roof during a Central Illinois storm.

Because once the tree is in the living room, we’re past preventative maintenance.
