We’ve learned a few things from our clients who’ve been successful in their home builds – and from clients who’ve had road bumps.

Each success story has a few things in common, so we compiled 5 tips to help you find success and avoid certain road bumps in your home building journey, whether you’re just dreaming, starting to plan, or in the middle of your build.

1 - Identify your north stars: Get super clear about your priorities. What’s most important to you? What can you compromise on?

2 - Understand your lot: What are you allowed to build? What are your restrictions? Knowing all of this early on (even before you own the land) will help avoid surprises down the road.

3 - Do an early cost estimate exercise with your builder. Bring in your builder early, teamwork is the dreamwork. Gut checking the cost to build in your local area - for the design you want to build - will help you manage expectations for what’s possible.

The Hangout V4 takes shape in Colorado! We’ve been calling this build “The Outpost”, as it’s set in a magnificent location with an unbelievable view. The design has been customized for the site and for a high performance, prefabricated shell (walls & roof). Follow along as it takes shape!

The Nest has been optimized for the B.PUBLIC Prefab panel system and has been designed to meet a stricter budget - aiming to make healthy, high performance homes more attainable.

Welcome to our newest home plan, The Nest. Designed to meet the needs of a growing family or a couple who’s ready to downsize, the home is a true balance of design and sustainability.

The Nest was developed in collaboration with B.PUBLIC Prefab to optimize prefabrication and budget - while still allowing a beautiful, livable design to shine front and center.

On the main level, an open kitchen, living, and dining area hold one side of the home, while a primary suite holds the other. In the middle, the hardworking central core: a laundry, pantry, powder room, and mechanical room. Up to the 2nd level, a small loft sits adjacent to a private office, both peeking down on the living & dining space below. A bathroom serves two bedrooms with sizable storage.

The Nest is our small, but not too small, home plan designed to uplift your day to day.

Our third issue of Home Diaries is live! I’m always so honored to see our homes get built. The stories behind the pretty pictures are even better though - folks turning their build into a home, why they decided to build, and how they made it happen… these stories will never get old.

Andy and Becky reached out in 2023 - in love with The Hangout (V1) for their property in Maine. They used the plan as-is, with the home fitting perfectly on their unique lot.

Over the last two years, Andy and Becky put all of the pieces into place to make their home a reality. Building a home from afar was no small feat, so they leaned into the welcoming nature of their small town community to help make it possible. Now, their family is looking forward to spending quality time on the lakes of Maine - and sharing the home with other families as well (hint hint: you can rent it!).
