In our Spring Lake Modern, the water became the quiet center of the design, shaping an approach to architectural design on the water where every room finds its own relationship to the lake and the horizon is never far from view. There is a quietness that comes from the horizontal line. For this Spring Lake Modern home, our approach to modern architecture was rooted in the landscape, using floating planes, warm limestone, and eco-roofs to create a sense of peace and calm. Explore Spring Lake Modern in our link in bio and discover how architecture can settle into its surroundings.

The vision for this serene Deephaven retreat began simply. While walking the lot and after standing upon a fallen tree, the heart of this home was discovered. Belonging to the landscape rather than impose upon it, a quiet architecture shaped by water, woods, and the natural contours of the land. Today, the home offers a rare kind of sanctuary, where light moves gently through the trees, the lake is always within reach, and the architecture invites a slower, more contemplative way of living. What does your summer retreat look like this time of year?

As these last days of summer linger, we find ourselves drawn to the peaceful embrace of this Minnesota home, where contemporary architecture opens generously to the landscape through expansive windows, low rooflines, and the enduring presence of Fond du Lac limestone. Inside, warm white oak, creamy walls, slate-toned surfaces, and quiet rust and bronze accents create a home of depth and warmth. It's an invitation to slow down, gather, and experience the beauty of the environment.

What does it mean to design a home that truly belongs to the Arizona landscape?
For Desert Harmony, Charles R. Stinson and Project Architect Chuck Thiss began with a simple idea: listen to the land before designing upon it.
Set within Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, the home works with the existing topography, native landscape, dramatic mountain views, shifting desert light, and the rhythms of the climate. In collaboration with Manship Builders, every decision was made to create a retreat that feels less imposed upon the landscape and more naturally rooted within it.
What began as a lovely returning client quickly turned into a testament to the idea that the most successful architecture can change how we experience a place and how we live within it.
In our latest journal, we’re exploring the approach behind Desert Harmony and what this project reveals about designing with the Arizona landscape rather than simply building within it.

What happens when you live in Minnesota and you miss the ocean?
For the original homeowners of this Cedar Lake residence, the answer was a warm, light-filled modern home inspired by their love of Australian coastal architecture and shaped by its extraordinary setting on the lake.
They wanted expansive views, an outdoor swimming pool, and a strong connection to the water, while maintaining privacy from the streetscape below. The steeply sloping site offered an opportunity to create something distinctive: a two-level home that appears to float above Cedar Lake.
A wall of Minnesota limestone shields the home from the street, while expansive windows open the interiors to the lake and Minneapolis skyline. The main living spaces sit above the landscape, creating a treehouse-like experience, with the kitchen flowing naturally to an elevated terrace and lake-facing pool.
As Charles shared with Lake Society Magazine, the goal was never simply to create a home with a view. It was to create a home that feels connected to what lies beyond the glass while offering comfort, privacy, and a sense of place.
Today, this home enters its next chapter. The architecture, materials, views, and spaces that were thoughtfully designed for one family now await the next stewards who will make the home their own.
