Processing is an important step before adding tuber clumps to cold storage. You can divide these clumps now, or store them in full clumps over the winter and divide them in the spring.

Storing wet tubers can result in rot, so do not skip the drying process! A couple of keys to remember are to store them out of direct sunlight and off of cement. The time to dry varies. I’ve seen some growers wait 48 hours after washing to dry. Unfortunately, our climate is so dry that waiting that long will make them shrivel. Ask growers in your area for advice on drying in your climate.

Every year I get a lot of questions about how to dig and process your tubers. The best time to dig your tubers is after your first hard frost. You can give the tubers a week or two in the ground to harden off before digging. Stick around for the rest of the series as we walk you through digging, washing, dividing and storing dahlia tubers.

Every year I end up ordering dahlias they don’t match their descriptions. Help me ID these five miss labels! They’re so beautiful.

Don’t forget to do this before Saturday! It saves a lot of time checking out and helps you get more of the dahlias you want for next season.
