In , we like to say “form follows function.” That means that it’s more important how a design plays out functionally than how it looks. Of course, we value beauty too!

Check out this front yard conversion, which features a hand-placed flagstone path for the residents, postal workers and delivery people who might frequent this route. Other features of this design include mulch, native plants, and drought-tolerant plants that will grow to create food, habitat and shade for other creatures in our area. 🦋🐛🐜

When we arrived on site, the weeds were absolutely running the show. Though it’s hard to see now, the native plants and drought-tolerant plant starts you see here will grow big enough to help crowd out weeds in this landscape moving forward. Native trees will provide habitat for native birds and insects, and create shade for the homeowners to enjoy.

Our team transformed this side yard from scorched earth to rainwater oasis! Eventually, the native grasses you see here will grow big enough to create habitat for birds and insects and grow deep roots that will help keep the soil in place. The trees planted here will create shade to keep this “scorched earth” look from repeating itself during Spokane’s hot summers. The dry creekbed will help direct and control the flow of water, making the most of our region’s minimal rainfall.

Are aphids at the root of your garden blues? Wasps provide us with free, eco-friendly pest control. 🪰🚫

Wasps are predators, which means they hunt garden pests (flies, gnats, mosquitoes and more!) for protein. Adult wasps don’t eat their prey; they feed it to developing young. As they go about hunting in your garden, wasps act as pollinators. By using the natural behaviors of wild organisms in the existing ecosystem, we can simultaneously enjoy and nourish the landscape.

We took back this yard from the weeds to create a beautiful, functional outdoor patio space. Native trees will provide food and shelter for birds and other fauna and the decomposed granite (DG) patio will help protect and preserve the soil. We’re so stoked with how this one turned out, and can’t wait to see it all grown in. In a few years, these trees will provide shade to help keep this area cool during Spokane’s toasty summers.

Why plant native plants? They grow naturally in the region where they evolved! Because of this, they are the ecological foundation that all life — every being from ants to elephants — depend on.

Do you want to practice climate justice in your own backyard? Check out these three ideas for implementing Regenerative Landscaping at home:

1️⃣ Ditch your grass.

Here in the U.S., we use 9 billion gallons of water a day just to water our grass. The EPA estimates that about 30% of all public water is used for this purpose. Additionally, grass lawns provide virtually no habitat for pollinators or other animals and plants that make up a healthy, diverse ecosystem.

2️⃣ Plant native plants.

Plants that grow naturally in our region have adapted to the pros and cons of the ecosystem of the Inland Northwest. This means they require little input (since they’ve figured out how to grow here naturally) and are good for the soil. As a bonus, native plants also help with fire prevention and act as beacons for pollinators.

3️⃣ Harvest rainwater.

In Spokane, we average about 17 inches of rainfall every year. That’s about as much water as the length of a rolling pin. Since we live in such dry conditions, we need to make the most of our scarce rainfall. Using rain barrels and cisterns to collect and re-purpose rainwater can help keep our gardens alive during dry months.

🌿 Purple Sage (Salvia leucophylla)

🌳 Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius)

🌼 Cutleaf Daisy (Engelmannia peristenia)

Native plants have spent thousands of years growing in this climate and forming symbiotic relationships with native wildlife. They are without a doubt the most sustainable choice for your yard and garden.
