Helpful Hint #8
Hardy Mums

Do not cut back the dead stems in late fall; leave them in place so they trap snow and leaves for natural root insulation.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’™FALL MIGRATION has BEGUN! 1st Sightings in South Texas by ๐Ÿ˜Ž Barbara VanMatre, Reporter for Hummingbird-News.

Many Ruby-throated males arriving in all ages and stages. This little guy was on patrol yesterday. He was guarding all the feeders because they are ALL his. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ Lots of chasing and chattering going on and also lots of sneaking in for quick sips. And guess who is really madโ€ฆ..the Buff-bellied. Their days of owning the backyard are over. Ruby-throated starting to take over and they donโ€™t care who was here first. Fall migration in full swing now. Black-chinned immatures also arriving and waiting for Rufous.

Helpful Hint # 7
Hardy Mums

Pinching: Pinch the growing tips back by about an inch every few weeks in spring and early summer. Stop pinching around the Fourth of July so the plant has time to set fall flower buds.

Deadheading: Snip off old, faded flowers to keep the plant neat during the active season.

Helpful Hint #6
Hardy Mums

Water them keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Water near the base of the plant to avoid rot. In the spring and summer, pinch the tips of new growth to encourage bushy, bloom-heavy plants in the fall.

Helpful Hint #5 Hardy Mums

Mums are heavy feeders. Apply a slow-release granular fertilizer in the spring, followed by a balanced, low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer (like 5-10-5) in midsummer to promote strong root and bud development.
