I connected with Nancy Kaplan from the Building Performance Institute (BPI) to talk about the history of BPI, how the organization was formed, and how its certifications and standards have helped shape the home performance industry.

We get into the ANSI standards-development and accreditation process, why independent standards matter, and the difference between simply passing a written test and demonstrating that you can actually perform the work. We also discuss BPI’s hands-on approach to certification, including field exams used in several credentials to evaluate real-world diagnostic and building performance skills.

I have the coolest job in the world! 🌎

I get to visit new places, meet incredible people, and share my passion for building science!

This week, I attended the inaugural Cold Climate Conference in Bozeman, Montana. My first visit to Bozeman did not disappoint! The hospitality, breathtaking mountain scenery, and beautiful Montana State University campus made for an amazing experience.

I also had the opportunity to tour the Montana Weatherization Training Facility and see the great work being done in workforce development.

The conference brought together contractors, raters, architects, consultants, manufacturers, and distributors, all working toward better buildings.

I had a great time presenting “Navigating the Heat Pump Jungle,” where we discussed getting heat pumps designed, installed, and commissioned correctly in cold climates.

Huge shoutout to the conference organizers for an outstanding event!

A special thank you to the US Heat Pump Summit for the opportunity to deliver the keynote address, "The Heat Pump Story.”

One of the key messages I shared: we’ve attempted this market transformation before. Heat pumps got a bad rap in the past, and if we want this transition to be successful today, we have to learn from those lessons.

Heat pump retrofits require skilled contractors who understand building science, proper sizing, installation, controls, and commissioning. The technology is only as good as the people designing and installing it.

A special thank you to the ESCO Institute-HVAC Excellence for supporting contractor education. They donated copies of *High-Performance Heat Pump Systems by Clifton Beck to contractors attending the Summit. Investing in contractor knowledge is exactly what our industry needs as heat pump adoption continues to grow.

Approximately 700 people came together in Worcester, Massachusetts, and we had a blast connecting with contractors, manufacturers, educators, program leaders, and other professionals working to move the industry forward.
