Before we aerate, we need to know what’s underneath the grass.

Irrigation heads, pet containment systems, robot mower wires and other underground fixtures need to be properly marked before we arrive. It helps us avoid damage and safely get the job done.

Mowing is so important. It makes or breaks a lawn.

In the fall season and with cooler weather, mowers should be set to cut the grass at 3”. Unfortunately, the persistent wet conditions have made grass cutting difficult over the past month and many mowing companies still have their decks up, cutting too tall. With decks higher, companies can move quicker because they lay more grass over than is actually cut off and there are fewer grass clippings to mitigate. As the grass lays over it smothers out the grass plants underneath, thinning the turfgrass instead of making it thicker. Also, the matted down grass prevents air from circulating and soils from drying.

This leads to poor soil health, which leads to poor lawn health.

In short, our pro tips for Fall mowing are go slower, cut shorter (around 3”), and consider back cutting.
