Should you leave the leaves?

A light layer is fine. Mow over it a couple of times and it breaks down right into the lawn.

The trouble starts when they pile up. A thick layer gets wet, the snow lands on top, and it mats the grass down all winter. Come April, you find thin, matted patches where the leaves sat.

Don't let them sit all winter. Fall cleanups are right around the corner. Let us handle the leaves this year.

Snow season in Sioux Falls isn't one big storm and done. It's a few inches overnight, wind that drifts it right back over what was just cleared, and a thaw that freezes into ice by the next day. Every one of those has to be handled before anyone needs to get in or out.

Parking lots get pushed and piled. Walkways get cleared right up to the door. Driveways get opened up so nobody's digging out before work. We handle it all.

Do you have your snow removal plan for this winter?

Before a new patio goes in, the old one has to come out.

On this job that started with the pillars and the wall around the patio. The crew took them apart with a sledge and a bar, loaded the block into the skid steer and hauled it off. Then the old pavers came up.

After that it's all base work. The ground in Sioux Falls freezes and thaws every winter, and the base is what has to handle that. So it gets leveled before the first new paver goes down.

None of this shows once the pavers are down.

Sprinkler blowout season is here in Sioux Falls.

Any water left in your lines when the first hard freeze hits can crack a head, split a fitting, or break a pipe. Most people don't find out until they turn the system back on in spring.

A blowout clears it out first. We hook up the compressor and run every zone, one at a time, until nothing but air comes out.

Get yours done before the first freeze. Give us a call to get on the schedule.

The space under a deck is the most wasted spot in a lot of Sioux Falls backyards.

It's covered and it's right off the back door. But the shade keeps grass from ever really taking, so it ends up as bare dirt, loose rock and wherever the hose gets dropped.

This one was dirt at the end of July. We dug it out, set a paver patio on a compacted base and built an outdoor kitchen under the deck. The deck was already giving them a roof. It just needed something built under it.

Same window, same door. Now there's a kitchen where the hose used to go.

Next year's projects get planned over the winter. If you want the space under your deck ready for next summer, now's the time to start that conversation.

Most people think of landscape lighting as something that makes the house look good from the road. That's part of it, but it does a lot more than that.

Once the sun's down, a yard without lights is pretty much done for the night. You can't see where the bed ends, where the patio starts, or the path out to the fire pit, so everybody heads inside whether they're ready or not.

Put light where people actually walk and sit and that changes. It doesn't take a big custom build to do it either.

If your patio or fire pit goes quiet once it's dark, reach out. We'd be glad to take a look.

Thanks to the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire - HBASE for hosting the VIP bus tour and for having us along. It was a good day being around the people building this city and seeing the work up close. Glad we got to be part of it.

It's not too early to start thinking about next year.

Design takes time. We come look at the yard and talk through what actually works for how you use it. Then you've got time to sit with it and look at options before anything gets ordered.

None of that needs good weather, which is why we do it over the winter. The building waits until the frost is out.

If next year's yard has been in the back of your head, now's a good time to bring it up.

If you have a sprinkler system, there's one thing left to do before winter.

The lines under your yard are still full of water. When the ground freezes, that water freezes with it and expands, and that's what cracks a head or splits a fitting down in the dirt. Nothing looks wrong in October. You find out in spring. A zone comes up weak, and the ground above the line stays soft.

Getting the water out takes one visit. We hook an air compressor to the system and run it zone by zone until nothing but air comes out.

Do it now and next year you turn it on, the lines fill back up, and you pick up right where you left off.

It's been a wet week in Sioux Falls, and this time of year the rain doesn't let up much. All that water has to go somewhere.

Every hard surface sheds it. If nothing catches it, it sits at the low edge, runs toward the foundation, or turns into a sheet of ice by November.

We set this channel drain right where the patio meets the border. But a drain only works if the water can find it. The whole surface has to be graded toward it, so every bit of it runs to the grate instead of sitting in a low spot. You don't notice any of that on a dry day. You notice it in a week like this one.
