Most homeowners start thinking about a kitchen remodel and assume they can get going in a few weeks. In central Massachusetts, that's almost never how it works.

Cabinet lead times alone can push your project out two to four months from the day you place the order. Add in permits, licensed electrical, and plumbing rough-in, and you're looking at a project that needs planning time before a single wall comes down.

We put this together because we get the same questions in October and November every year, usually from someone who wanted to start in September. The numbers in here are real, pulled from actual projects we've run in Shrewsbury and Worcester.

Before Seven Pines existed, I was delivering pizzas in Boston. My brother Romero had just left that same business to learn construction, picking up the trade one job at a time. Every conversation we had ended the same way: we have to build our own company someday.

Then he called and said he was ready to stop saying someday.

We started with lawns, carpentry, and painting. Our first investment was a used pickup truck. That first summer was good enough that we earned back everything we had put into it. Then a client asked us to rebuild a barn, the kind you see all over out here. That job meant leaving the safety net behind for good. So we did.

What followed was years of insurance restoration work, putting families' homes back together after damage. That is where we truly learned what quality means. When a family is counting on you, there is only one way to do the work: the right way.

We are still the same two guys. We still show up. We still do the work that way. And we back it with a 3-year workmanship warranty because we mean it.

We run exterior projects through mid-October most years. After that, temperatures in Shrewsbury, Weston, and out toward Wayland get unpredictable enough that we will not put paint or siding adhesive on a house and guarantee it properly.

That is not a scare tactic. That is just the calendar up here.

If you have been thinking about exterior painting, fiber cement siding, or cedar trim replacement before winter, we have a narrow number of slots left in September. Once those are filled, the next opening for exterior work is spring 2027.

Interior work, floors, kitchens, bathrooms, we do year-round. But if it lives outside the house, now is the window.

We get calls every January from homeowners who want a kitchen done by March. Sometimes we can make it work. Often, we can't, and the reason is almost always cabinets.

Most cabinet orders, even the more straightforward ones, run 8 to 14 weeks from the order date to delivery. Custom or semi-custom can push past that. By the time you add permitting, scheduling, and the actual install, a project that starts its planning in October can realistically be finished by late winter or early spring.

A project that starts planning in December is a spring project at best, and that's if everything moves.

We have project slots available right now for early 2027 starts in Shrewsbury and Worcester. If you want one of them, the time to get into an estimate is now, not after the holidays.

Ask anyone who's had work done on their house what went wrong, and it's almost never the finished product.

It's the dust in the bedroom two rooms away. The scratched hardwood in the hallway. The crew that left at 2pm without saying anything and didn't come back for three days.

This photo is a ceiling and drywall job in progress. Nothing about it is pretty. But look at what's actually happening:

Plastic sealed floor to ceiling on the open side. Ram board and rosin paper over every inch of finished floor. Tape lines run clean. Tools staged, not scattered. And this is mid-job — not the staged shot we take when we're packing up.

We do it this way because we're not visiting your house. We're working in it. Sometimes for weeks. The family still has to live there while we do.

This week we are in Lexington installing hardwood in a home where the old flooring had to come out completely.

Most people think a hardwood job starts with the wood. It starts with what's underneath it.

Day one is entirely subfloor. Old flooring pulled up and hauled out. Every sheet of plywood walked and checked for movement. Screwed down, not nailed. Leveled across the whole room, because a floor that moves under the subfloor will move under the finish too.

We prep the walls in the same pass. Coming back to patch drywall after new hardwood is down is exactly how new floors get damaged.

Skip the subfloor and the room looks perfect for about eight months. Then the squeak by the doorway. The gap that opens up in February. The one board that never sat right and never will.

Nobody photographs this step. Nobody thanks you for it. It's just the difference between a floor that lasts and a floor that gets redone.

Bare or previously painted exterior wood trim needs a minimum of three coats to hold up in Massachusetts winters. One coat of a bonding primer, then two coats of a quality exterior finish. That is not us upselling extra work. That is what the paint manufacturer requires for the warranty to apply, and it is what the wood actually needs to resist the freeze-thaw cycles we get every year between December and March.

A lot of contractors brush on two coats total and move to the next job. It looks fine in October. By April the paint is cracking at the edges and lifting at the joints.

If you are getting exterior trim quotes right now, ask specifically: how many coats and what primer are you using? The answer tells you a lot.

One of the things we hear most from people who've worked with other contractors before calling us: they got tired of waiting. Waiting for callbacks. Waiting for the crew to show up. Waiting to find out what was happening with their project.

We are not perfect, but communication is something we take seriously from day one. You get a real estimate in writing, you know who is coming to your home, and you hear from us before anything changes.

Paint needs the surface to stay above 50 degrees, not just the air. On a clear September day here in Shrewsbury, the air might read 62 but a north-facing wall in shade can drop below that threshold by mid-afternoon. That is when adhesion problems start, and you do not see them until next spring when the paint begins to peel.

We watch the weather closely in September and October. We adjust start times. We know which sides of a house to hit first. That is not overthinking it, that is just doing the job right.

A lot of homeowners in Newton and Needham call us ready to pull up their old hardwood and start over. Most of the time, that is not what the floor actually needs.

Refinishing runs between $1,500 and $4,500 for a typical home, depending on square footage and condition. Full replacement is a different number entirely. Before you spend more, it is worth knowing what you are actually looking at.

We sand, stain, and finish hardwood floors all across central and eastern MA. If your floors feel tired but the boards are still solid, there is a good chance they have one or two good lives left in them.
