The Barn, Esopus Forest
The Longhouse structures of Esopus Forest grew from an architectural philosophy in which shelter, studio, landscape, and creative practice were treated as parts of a single living environment. At the center is “The Barn,” Charles Tracy's residence and working retreat, its long interior volumes, blonde wood surfaces, expansive windows, and views into the surrounding forest creating a quiet counterpoint to his earlier New York studios.
More than a home, The Barn is a place of assembly and exchange, where photography, objects, painting, architecture, and memory could coexist without formal boundaries. It was here, in collaboration with myself and Patrick di Santo, that Tracy gathered and shaped the work that became the acclaimed CHARLES TRACY: CHIFFON—transforming decades of photographic observation into a meditation on the human figure, fabric, movement, and light, within an architecture conceived around many of those same principles. -Elsa Peretti
