Graham and Angus went for a walk today.

Haven't posted for a while after losing most of our herd to a pack of loose dogs after a branch fell on fence. We have LGD's now!

But on a positive note last year we gave a friend of ours two goats as a house warming present. After our loss she loaned us back the girls so we can rebuild. They both gave us triplets as a first time moms!!! All 6 are healthy boys. Then one of our girls gave us 3 more boys today as well.

Farmland Loss is a hot topic these days and as a farmer I cannot address this topic without shining a light on the root cause of the problem. First of all can we acknowledge that land is only farmland if it has farmers on it? The farmers have all left the land and farmland loss is just one of the repercussions. Where have the farmers gone? They left the land because over the past 100 years modern society has fundamentally changed agriculture, effectively taking the ‘Culture’ part right out. Not long ago all farmers were able to make a living off the land, producing a diversity of food while working with nature. The process of Industrialization, Commodification, and Centralization we have made food cheaper and cheaper at the cost of our environment, our farmers, our livestock, leaving our once thriving rural communities in decay.

So what can we do to reverse this problem? Preserve farmland now because once it’s gone it’s gone!! But then the real work begins and that work requires reimagining a food system that no longer values efficiency over equity. A system that reimagines what land ownership looks like and one that values farmers for who they are: stewards of the landscape and the producers of food that sustains communities around the world!
