DID YOU KNOW?:

Tumbleweeds begin their lives as little green shrubs called Salsola Tragus, aka Russian thistle. There are several other species that turn into "tumbleweeds," but this particular one is an icon of the American West. The death of a Russian thistle marks the beginning of its reproductive cycle.

Salsola is a genus of the subfamily Salsoloideae in the family Amaranthaceae. The genus Sensu Stricto is distributed in Central and Southwestern Asia, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.

The Russian thistle made its first known appearance in North America in the 1870s, in Bonhomme County, South Dakota. It's thought to have arrived surreptitiously; its inconspicuous seeds well hidden in a containment of Flax seed imported from what was then the Russian Empire. Russian thistle was accidentally introduced to the United States by immigrants in 1873 in contaminated Flax seeds brought to South Dakota. Further spread was facilitated by more contaminated Flax in railroad cars and natural wind spread of seeds.

The Navajo found some medicinal uses for the plant for treating influenza and small pox. Frontiers-people burned them to make soap.

DID YOU KNOW?:

The word pineapple comes from European explorers who thought the fruit combined the look of a pinecone with flesh similar to an apple. Pineapples are the only edible members of the Bromeliad family.
