Tree inventories are a great way for clients with many trees to keep track of their landscape over time.
Each tree is tagged and entered into a spreadsheet that records details like species, size, health, risk, and management decisions.
This gives the client (and their arborist!) a clear reference for future care and a fascinating snapshot of how the property’s forest evolves—what’s thriving, what’s declining, and where to focus next.

Here’s a cool example of reaction wood in a Monterey cypress. These huge limbs (some over 40 ft long on this massive tree!) grow compression wood on the underside to fight gravity. Notice how the dark pith is pushed off-center as the tree reinforces itself. Even with the extra support, this limb finally got too heavy and snapped, so we had to remove it.

Grateful we got to this tree before the utility line trimmers did!
I have a lot of respect for the essential work PG&E contractors do—but as a tree lover, it’s painful to see some of the resultant trees after line clearance work has been done. Thanks to our clients for holding them off and giving us the chance to shape this Chinese pistache tree with care.

Last week we pruned a co-dominant cypress tree and installed a cable to reduce its risk of failure.
When multiple stems grow from the same point, they compete for dominance, increasing stress on their shared union. Over time, this can lead to structural failure, often requiring full tree removal.
A dynamic synthetic cable allows for natural movement while reducing excessive strain on the union—helping the tree strengthen over time. Unlike static steel cables, these cables have some flex to them and they can be easily adjusted as the trees grow. Ongoing monitoring is important to ensure longterm stability, but we’re happy to offer solutions like these as an alternative is to cutting down a beautiful tree!

I often get called to investigate a “sick tree” and show up to find it covered in moss or lichen. Rather than signaling disease, their presence is usually a sign of clean air and a moist environment—two things that generally help trees thrive.
Lichens, in particular, are highly sensitive to air pollution, so if you have an abundance of them on your property, you likely have excellent air quality! These organisms don’t harm trees—they simply use the bark as a surface to grow on, unlike parasitic plants or fungi that extract resources from their host.
Unless you notice a sudden surge in their growth or they start shading out a tree’s foliage, there’s no need for concern—just enjoy the fresh air!
