Here's a look inside an attached ADU we built in Bellevue.

"Attached" means it's built onto the main house and isn't a separate cottage in the backyard. It's still its own place, with its own kitchen and bath.

The photos: the finished living room and kitchen, the kitchen area back at the drywall stage with two skylights already in, then the finished bath and the finished kitchen.

One whole build in one short video. This is an ADU we built in West Seattle, start to finish.

It goes in order: clear the lot, steel goes in, then the slab. Walls go up, windows go in, cabinets go in. Then it's finished, and the camera steps inside to the kitchen, the bath and the laundry.

Is a backyard ADU just a shed? We hear that one a lot. Here are five things homeowners around Seattle and the Eastside believe, and what's true.

1. "It's basically a shed." In Seattle a backyard cottage can be up to 1,000 square feet, and some cities allow more.
2. "It takes a year to build." The build takes three to four months, once the permit is issued.
3. "The owner has to live on the lot." Not anymore. Washington law ended that rule.
4. "Bellevue doesn't allow them." Bellevue has allowed backyard cottages since June 2025.
5. "You can't get a real number for free." You can.

This bath is in a backyard cottage, not in a main house.

It's inside a DADU of ours in Redmond. A DADU is a detached ADU: a small second home on the same lot as the main house. Behind the glass there's a freestanding tub and a rain shower, with marble look tile, matte black fixtures and a wood vanity next to it.

We rebuilt this cottage from an old structure, and everything in it is new. An ADU can be finished as well as the main house, and how far you take it is your call.
