Mossy Moment of the Day 🌿🪿

First, the footsteps.

crunch. crunch. crunch.

Then they appeared.

A field trip of tiny humans approaching one very unimpressed Canadian goose.

Teacher: “Give her a wide berth. Give her lots of space.”

Small voice from the crowd:

“Because if you get too close, they might bite you.”

Today’s lesson:

Respect the goose.

A fun trip to Mount Baker yielded incredible views, mountain air, and this gorgeous forage!

So many colors, textures and tiny forest treasures gathered into one beautiful pile. 🌿🍂

One of my favorite parts of Moss Mom is discovering what grows in the wild corners of the PNW, then bringing a little of that wonder home to become something entirely new.

🌿 Mossy Moment of the Day 💀

Burgandi was Moss Mom’s very first patron. She commissioned the first moss garden I ever sold, and she’s been part of this strange little moss-covered adventure ever since.

So she gets something special.

Every quarter, I swap out her garden for a new seasonal Wonder Piece, a showcase creation where I get to stretch creatively and make something completely new for her.

Her original garden was four tiers, and Burgandi loves the drama of a big, multi-level piece, so for fall I knew I wanted to go there again.

And then I found the skull. 💀

It’s a reverse-flow incense burner, and I fell completely in love with its witchy energy. I built the pedestal and tiers around it, then created this little autumnal world of living moss, stone, lichen, dried botanicals, fallen leaves, roses and a tiny gravestone.

When the incense is lit, smoke slowly spills from the skull’s eye and drifts down through the garden.

It is weird.
It is witchy.
It is wonderfully Moss Mom. 🖤

The latest Wonder Piece was delivered to its rightful home this week, just in time for spooky season.

And Burgandi loved it.

As we transition from harvest season into cozy, cool days full of pumpkins, fireplace evenings with crackling fires, hot mugs to sip on, and every aching ombré of orange, we’re letting autumn usher us gently into an October vibe.

Cool autumn breezes are officially invited. 🍁🔥☕

Here’s to slowing down, gathering in, wandering the woods, and watching the whole Pacific Northwest turn itself into art.

SURPRISE! 🌿✨ Moss Mom is popping up TODAY at the Enchanted Maker’s Market in Arlington!

Because apparently the appropriate response to a last-minute market invitation is to go foraging for moss at 1 a.m. and come home to make an entirely new batch of tiny forests. 😂🌙🌿

I’ll have lots of fresh new small gardens made especially for today — woodland creatures, vintage vessels, foraged treasures and all the tiny weird forest magic you expect from your Fairy Moss-Mother.

AND I’m bringing some of my newest Wonderpieces — larger, one-of-a-kind botanical artworks that take Moss Mom into a whole new realm of living art. ✨

🌿 Mossy Moment of the Day 🌊

My love and I built a castle by the sea.

We spent the afternoon at Jetty Island picnicking, frolicking in the water, watching kite surfers dance across the sky while sunlight scattered across the waves.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, we started building.

Sand. Driftwood. Seaweed. Whatever the beach offered us.

A tower.
A driftwood drawbridge.
A seaweed flag.
And, of course, a moat. 🏰

Two grownups playing in the sand, making something for absolutely no reason except that it delighted us.

Then the tide turned.

Little by little, gentle waves reached our kingdom and began filling the moat.

And we watched.

Because maybe not everything beautiful needs to be carried home.

Some things are meant to belong to one sparkling summer afternoon.

To bare feet and salty skin.
To laughter and sunshine.
To two people building castles together simply because they still can.

We made a little world at the edge of the Salish Sea.

Then we watched the sea come home to it. 🌊💚

Into the garden we go. 🌿

Today I got to put on my moss crown, gather up one of my wildest botanical creations, and spend the day among flowers, makers and a little bit of garden magic.

Somewhere along the way, Moss Mom has become so much more than making moss gardens. I’m finding myself building creatures, portraits, sculptures and strange little pieces of the forest that don’t quite fit into a category yet.

And honestly? I think that might be my favorite part.

Growing something new sometimes means letting it become something you never planned. 💚

Grow slow, die never.
