Three HVAC myths worth clearing up, starting with the most surprising one. Duct tape does not work on ductwork, despite the name. It loses its grip over time and lets air leak right back out. HVAC rated foil tape is the actual fix.

Next, AC systems don't automatically last 20 plus years. A well maintained one usually gets around 15, sometimes 20, but condition matters more than age when deciding whether to replace it.

Last one, filters aren't reversible. Look for the arrow and point it toward the air handler or furnace. Backward, and the filter isn't doing its job.

When in doubt, follow the arrow.

That fuzz on your outdoor AC unit is basically giving it a sweater in the middle of summer.

Cottonwood sticks to the coil, blocks heat release, and makes your system work harder for less cooling.

Here's one that surprises almost everyone. A ceiling fan doesn't actually cool down a room.

It doesn't lower the temperature at all. It just moves air across your skin, which makes you feel cooler in the moment, but the room itself stays exactly the same temperature the whole time.

That's why it feels so much better standing under one on a hot day, even though nothing about the room has actually changed. Which also means leaving a fan running in an empty room isn't cooling anything, it's just using electricity.
