STATEMENT
A meta-process and physically context-specific videowork tucked into the 3D Typography series, ‘DECODE’ is an interactive art-puzzle that while intentionally not prompted to on-site requires a selfie be taken with the piece in the background in order to properly read the word DECODE.
With the word’s letters reversed and each letter’s bottom half rotated on its central vertical axis at the top of the video and therefore the word’s top half a reflection in the Buoyant Pavilion’s mirrored ceiling, the piece tangibly and poetically occupies more than simply the projection area.
A gentle metaphor for Redmond’s split agriculture/tech history and a living example of its contemporary capacity for Engagingly Solving Problems, DECODE subtly shifts in tonality, itself a humble nod to Cultural Evolution cycles, as its many randomly introduced black vertical bars pan left and right both behind and in front of the text in an attempt to whimsically take advantage of the Pavilion’s physical bar-based screen construction to create the illusion that some are flickering, turning off and back on, etc.
Fascinatingly, our brains’ Visual Word Form Area, once triggered by the moment the shapes are bound together as relationally unified, attempts to decode them as meaningful linguistic symbols… we are compelled to understand, to decode DECODE.
