🌳 Contrarian Opinion From the Tree Service Industry 🌳

Bigger equipment does NOT always mean better tree service.

In our industry, many companies rely heavily on bucket trucks, cranes, and large machinery for every job. While those tools have their place, they can also leave behind damaged lawns, broken irrigation lines, ruts in yards, and unnecessary property damage.

At Advanced Tree Service, we believe skill matters more than size.

Experienced tree climbers with ropes, harnesses, and proper rigging can often complete difficult removals more safely and with far less impact to a customer’s property than heavy equipment alone.

Sometimes the “faster” way is not the better way.

Homeowners are starting to care less about seeing massive machines and more about:
✔️ Protecting their property
✔️ Working with experienced crews
✔️ Clean, careful work
✔️ Honest recommendations
✔️ Long-term tree health

The best tree service companies are not always the ones with the biggest trucks — they’re the ones customers trust to treat their property like their own.

Most garden pest control starts at the hardware store. It doesn't have to.

These ten plants release compounds through their leaves, roots, or flowers that specific pests tend to avoid. No sprays, no powders, no reapplication schedule — they work the whole time they grow.

The ones most people underestimate are the herbs. Basil next to tomatoes helps keep aphids and flies off the fruit. Chives around carrots discourage the carrot fly that ruins roots underground. Rosemary tucked near brassicas makes it harder for cabbage moths to find their target.

The flowers do heavier work than they get credit for. Marigold roots change the soil chemistry around them — nematodes that damage vegetable roots tend to stay away from beds where marigolds have grown for a full season.

🌿 A few placement tips:

- Nasturtiums work as a trap crop — aphids prefer them over your vegetables, so plant them at the edge of the bed as a decoy
- Mint spreads aggressively — plant it in a buried pot or it takes over the bed it's supposed to be protecting
- Garlic interplanted with roses or between vegetable rows helps discourage aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles

The best pest plan isn't a product. It's a planting plan 🌱

A branch that snaps off a willow tree in a storm can become a new tree in two weeks — no nursery, no root ball, no hundred-dollar price tag. Dozens of trees and shrubs grow from nothing but a cutting dropped in water on a windowsill.

- Willow — one of the fastest tree rooters, visible roots in five to seven days, and the cutting releases a natural rooting hormone into the water that helps other plants root faster too
- Elderberry — cut a twelve-inch dormant stem in late winter, strip the lower buds, roots appear in three to four weeks
- Forsythia — snip a six-inch stem of new green growth in spring, roots form in two to three weeks
- Rose — cut an eight-inch stem from a healthy cane, strip the lower leaves and thorns, roots develop in four to six weeks
- Currant — take a ten-inch hardwood cutting in late fall, roots form slowly over winter in water, ready to plant by spring

Honeysuckle, mulberry, privet, dogwood, and crepe myrtle all root the same way — a healthy cutting, a tall glass, and patience measured in weeks instead of dollars.

The most expensive thing at the nursery started out as a stick in someone's glass of water.
