These dahlias are so exclusive they only grow in my backyard. 💁♀️
Growing dahlias from seed is a multi-year project with unpredictable odds. Most won’t be remarkable, but some might become your new favorite dahlias.
These sibling dahlias were grown from seeds from last year’s Rockstar dahlia which was pollinated by bees. Every single bloom is a genetic unknown.
Why? Dahlias have eight sets of chromosomes. Eight. We have two. Dahlia seedlings rarely look exactly like their parents, so growing them from seed is a little like plant genetics roulette.
Every bloom is a surprise, with a very slow reveal.
Out of 56 seedlings, I’ll probably keep fewer than five. But I only need one to stop me in my tracks.
And now is the time to start your own dahlia seed-growing adventure.
Harvest seeds from your dahlias now, start them indoors about six weeks before your last frost (I started these last January), and plant them out next year to grow dahlias that are completely unique to you.
You never know what you’ll get, and that’s the fun part.
