Steps to Safely Shut Down Your Whole-Home Generator

If you need to shut down your generator during an emergency, or simply need to check the oil, follow these steps:

🛑 To Shut the Generator Down:

Turn the breaker OFF. The breaker is located either above the controller or on the side panel, depending on the generator model.
Put the generator in the OFF position. This can be done using the controller or the side panel, depending on the model.
Let the generator cool down completely.
Check the oil once the generator has cooled.

▶️ To Turn the Generator Back On:

Put the generator back into AUTO mode.
Give it time to start and come back up to operating speed.
Once the generator is fully up to speed and running normally, turn the breaker back ON.

⚠️ Safety Reminder: Always use caution when working around a generator. If you are unsure about any step, consult your generator’s owner’s manual or contact Stanis Generators.

Some great tips to keep in mind when using a portable generator.

While our response area hasn’t been hit as hard as some of our neighboring communities, this is a great reminder to use generators safely!

First responders have been answering numerous calls for carbon monoxide alarms. In several cases, generator exhaust has made its way into homes, creating a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide.

Generator Safety Reminders:
• Always operate generators outdoors and well away from your home, garage, doors, windows, and vents.
• Never use a generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or other enclosed space.
• Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.
• If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so you may not know there’s a problem until an alarm activates or someone becomes ill.

Please stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and use generators properly!
