In 1994, Steve Hance founded DeckMasters with a deep understanding of the unique topography and architectural needs for deck preservation in Marin County. Alongside his partner, Scott Demming, they personally power washed and preserved decks during their inaugural season. It became evident that there was a pressing demand for knowledgeable wood preservation specialists in the area. Following a suc
cessful first season, DeckMasters faced increased demand, prompting the addition of their first employee, a young and driven 19-year-old named Brandon Slack. Brandon quickly excelled in the field, assuming leadership roles and amassing a large fan base among DeckMasters' clients. With the assurance that his clientele was in capable hands, Steve Hance seized the opportunity to sell and expand the company. In 2001, Steve and Brandon joined forces to expand the business into an interior and exterior painting powerhouse called HouseSavers. During this period, Brandon further honed his skills not only in painting but also specialized in Elastomeric decking membrane applications and deck construction. In 2014, Brandon ventured out on his own, dedicating himself to mastering the art of building and remodeling. In early 2023, Steve Hance approached Brandon for a pivotal meeting, signaling his retirement and his intention to entrust the future of the company to one individual. Recognizing that DeckMasters was raised and nurtured by only one other person, Steve knew that Brandon Slack was the only one who possessed the same passion and care for the beloved company. Following that memorable meeting, Brandon realized his calling and embraced the responsibility of preserving the DeckMasters/HouseSavers brand and its loyal clientele.
