In addition to a fantastic conversation each Echoes of Future Matter panelist brought art artifact that embodied our discussion on digital poetics, local materials, co-invention, and material futures.

Cocktail Table by Daghan Cam (Aibuild) The printed base showcases visible toolpaths that create stunning light effects, while the wooden top grounds it in familiar warmth. It’s a perfect example of embracing manufacturing poetry—letting the crafting process become part of the aesthetic language.

Metal Artefact by Oluseun Taiwo ( ) Custom metal 3D printed column pushed to reveal the novel manufacturing process. The visible toolpath from metal deposition creates a unique aesthetic that celebrates rather than hides the manufacturing method. This isn’t about perfection but typology optimization combined with process artifacts that results in something very unique.

Light Nexus by Andrei Hakhovich ( ) A vessel is born from architectural fascination with vaults and light apertures. This hybrid piece blends manual design with physical paper mockups translated into 3D models, then printed with recycled wood-plastic filament and hand-finished with lime wash. This approach allowed to create poetic dance between order and chaos, mass and void.

Vault Bench by Damaso Mayer ( ) Carved from discarded natural stone, this piece is a meditation on precision and imperfection and nature. The vaulted section is saw-cut and rough-knocked, embracing the tool marks and material irregularities in poetic contrast to the precisely cut top and sides. It is a way of finding beauty in the “imperfect” and poetics in craft and material histories.

Wynwood Facade Study Model by Thom Faulders ( ) A mockup that reveals the multi-scalar thinking of the studio. Testing light and material effects across macro and micro scales, this model shows how architectural ideas move between studio and built reality, iterating on how light, material, and perception interact.

Each piece offers a valuable perspective of material futures where imperfections celebrated, processed goes in hand with design, technology guided by narrative and intuition

Andrei Hakhovich is the founder of Gradient Matter — an ideas-driven, multidisciplinary design studio based in San Francisco, California. The studio operates at the intersection of architecture, public art, interiors, and bespoke objects, creating works that are poetic, atmospheric, provocative, ecological, and performative — designed to evoke a deep sensorial impact. Gradient Matter collaborates with a diverse range of clients, from tech companies and developers to local communities and private individuals.

As an architectural designer, Andrei’s work blends creative inquiry with material intelligence, computational design, and digital fabrication — allowing him to explore new narratives, spatial experiences, and expressive forms in meaningful ways.

In addition to his design practice, Andrei is a Senior Adjunct Faculty at both the California College of the Arts and the Academy of Art University, where he teaches architecture studios and seminars on design, structural innovation, computational design, and digital fabrication.

Meet Oleseun Taiwo, co-founder of , a Berkeley-based startup revolutionizing autonomous manufacturing for the aerospace industry.

Thom Faulders is the founder of Faulders Studio , a multidisciplinary design practice based in Oakland, California. The studio approaches architecture as an open-ended condition shaped by context and perceptual experience. Its work intentionally balances stability with change, drawing on a wide range of fabrication methods and material strategies. Faulders Studio collaborates with leading clients and institutions to create one-of-a-kind projects that engage diverse urban settings. The work is the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, FRAC Centre Orleans in France, and is exhibited and published internationally.
