The tunneling was only the beginning.

Tunneling below the front smoker led to an opening at the corner of the brick wall that had previously been filled with foam.

The foam and debris were removed, exposing the access point behind the wall. Traps were strategically placed around the opening to target the remaining activity before permanently sealing the gap.

Trap first. Then seal.

The signs are there if you know what to look for.

Rub marks along piping and chewed wiring can help identify active rodent travel routes. Following the activity led to several openings around plumbing and conduit that rodents could use to enter the structure.

This is why it’s important to follow the evidence and inspect beyond the obvious areas.

Follow the travel route. Find the openings. Seal the access.

The strategy changes as you learn more.

After clearing away overgrown vegetation, additional burrow openings and active travel routes became easier to identify.

I repositioned traps directly around the openings and along the brick wall and fence line to intercept rat activity.

Constant monitoring helps determine where adjustments need to be made.

Rodent pressure starts with the conditions.

Behind this access door is a water heater and grease trap serving a café in the building. The noticeable grease buildup is a significant food attractant for rodents and should be addressed.

On the opposite side of the wall, I identified an open hole and an unsealed annular gap around a pipe pe*******on, providing potential access into the wall cavity.

Remove the attractant. Seal the access.

Don’t overlook the door sweep.

A worn or damaged door sweep can leave enough space for rodents to enter a commercial building, especially when the door leads directly outside.

This sweep is no longer providing a complete seal along the bottom of the door and should be replaced with a properly fitted commercial-grade sweep.

Small gaps like this can be all a rodent needs to get inside.

Built to keep rodents out.

Both rats and mice were actively using this opening around the b**r and soda lines. The rodents had also chewed through a b**r line, causing a leak and creating an additional attractant. The lines were inspected by a qualified technician and the leak was repaired.

Metal mesh was fitted tightly around the lines, then reinforced with aluminum sheeting to create a strong, durable barrier.

Rodent control isn’t just about trapping. Address attractants and seal the openings.

The problem goes deeper than what you see.

Norway rats are strong burrowers and commonly build tunnels in soil near buildings, fences, vegetation, and food and water sources.

This large burrow was found during routine monitoring. Instead of immediately closing the opening, traps were strategically placed around the burrow and along both sides of the fence line to intercept active travel routes before the burrow is sealed.

Find the source. Trap strategically. Then seal.

Don’t overlook the windows.

Open windows without secure screens can provide rodents with another way inside, whether it’s a commercial kitchen or an upper floor.

Properly fitted screens are a simple but important part of keeping rodents out and protecting the building.

Keep the fresh air. Keep the rodents out.

Follow the travel route.

Rats were using soda lines and conduit as a travel route into the attic and back-of-house dry storage area. The access point has since been sealed.

Regular cleaning helps remove food debris and disrupt scent trails that keep rats returning. Keeping exterior doors closed also helps prevent new access.

Trap. Sanitize. Seal.

Don’t give rats another place to go.

An open access panel inside a commercial restaurant exposes a large utility chase with plumbing, electrical lines and multiple pathways into concealed areas of the building.

When rats are already active inside, openings like this should stay secured. Don’t give them another travel route or place to hide.

Find the openings. Follow the travel routes. Trap strategically.
