Fall is one of the best times to plant citrus in San Diego 🍊 The soil is still warm, so new roots get a head start before winter.

Quick tips for a healthy citrus tree:
☀️ Full sun, at least 6–8 hours
💧 Deep, less frequent watering, and check the soil before you water
🍂 A few inches of mulch, kept away from the trunk
🥶 In colder inland spots, protect young trees on frosty nights

Aphids showing up on your new spring growth? Don't panic.

Here's what I do (no chemicals needed): Strong spray of water knocks them off. Do it in the morning. Repeat every 2-3 days for a week. That's it.

Why it works: Aphids are soft-bodied. Water pressure disrupts them. They can't climb back up easily. And you're not poisoning your soil or your food.

If you're growing edibles, this is the move. Safe for you, your family, and your garden.

💧 March Water-Wise Tip: The Mulch Game-Changer

Spring is here and watering season is ramping up. Here's the single most effective thing you can do to cut water use in half: mulch.

Why mulch works:
✓ Reduces soil evaporation by 50-70%
✓ Keeps soil temperature stable (less stress on plants)
✓ Improves soil health as it breaks down
✓ Suppresses weeds (fewer competitors for water)
✓ Costs way less than increasing irrigation

The right way to mulch:
1. Use 3-4 inches of organic mulch (wood chips, compost blend)
2. Keep it 6 inches away from tree/shrub trunks (prevents rot)
3. Refresh annually—mulch breaks down and settles
4. Avoid dyed mulch; natural is better for soil biology

San Diego's spring sun is intense. Bare soil loses water fast. Mulched soil stays moist longer, which means you water less, your plants stress less, and your bill goes down.

Ready to build a water-wise landscape that actually produces food? That's what we do.

Spring watering in San Diego? Here's what actually works.

Most people think "spring = more water." Wrong. Our soil is still cool, and plants aren't growing as fast yet. This is when overwatering kills more gardens than drought does.

Here's my rule: Water deep but less often. Stick your finger 3 inches into the soil. If it's moist, wait another day or two. If it's dry, soak it thoroughly.

This saves water AND keeps your plants healthier. Win-win.
