This past April we were contracted by the City of Cerritos to install this really fun sculpture entitled “Milking Time ~ A Tribute to Dairy Valley” honoring the history of the City’s agriculture and Dairy Farming industry. The City commissioned award-winning artist Jane DeDecker, who’s represented by the National Sculptor’s Guild, to create this beautiful bronze artwork in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the City of Cerritos.

The scuplture was dedicated on April 25, 2026 and features prominently in the front of their City Hall. It is not only a worthy tribute to this cherished history, but a terrific addition to their growing public artwork collection. If you’re ever in the area, stop by and tour the sculpture garden adjacent to the City Buildings. It’s definitely worth the visit.

A big thanks to Daniel Esquivel and Jared Lee on the staff at the City of Cerritos Public Works Dept for entrusting us to complete this important project for them. We value these partnerships and truly appreciate how important Public Artwork plays a role in reflecting and inspiring the community in which it resides.

We’ve always specialized in handling and installing large scale, reclaimed wood slabs. Many of them can be tricky to install given their various organic weights and sizes, combined with exceptional fragility. Coming in at roughly 350+ lbs and 6x10 feet, this sandblasted strangle root from David Alan Collection was no exception to that fact.

The story goes that a client of theirs from Laguna Beach was on a bike road trip down to San Diego and stopped into the store, saw this piece and wanted to buy it on the condition of assurances it could be hung on a wall. That’s when our partners David Alan Collection reached out to us to see if it was possible. Our philosophy has always been if we can imagine it installed, and back engineer it from the finished product, then it’s doable.

In formulating a plan, we laid the piece down to take depth measurements from a flat surface and see where it wanted to be connected to the wall. We then designed custom hardware and had our metal fabricator Terry Dixon Terry Dixon create the brackets to connect it. We then calculated where the wall would need to be removed and reinforced by the GC prior to installation. Because of course, the inspiration for this install was an afterthought, as is the case quite often. 😅

When we got it to the site, we used a laser and levels to illuminate the high spots (not easy to do in the sun!) and ground them down to have flat, even surfaces to mount the hardware. Once those dimensions were finally translated to the wall and the corresponding brackets securely installed, it was then a matter of grunt work bringing it in and sliding onto the custom mounts.

It would have been nice to have gotten a video of this piece to really capture the scale. But regardless, the effect of it floating on the wall without any effort is something truly dramatic. Let us know what you think in the comments! ⬇️

If you have an idea or inspiration that seems “out there” hit us up and let’s see what we can come up with. More often than not, there’s always a solution.
