Being a small business owner isn't always easy. When we started Spectrum Plumbing, we set out to make a difference in our community, share decades of knowledge and experience, and hopefully do things a little differently than your typical plumbing company.

What you don't always realize when starting a business is that the freedom to set your own hours often turns into longer workdays, late nights, and weekends spent catching up on everything you couldn't get to during the week.

This weekend, we decided to put the brakes on.

It was becoming clear that the kids in the Kinsley household needed some uninterrupted time with Mom and Dad. No checking phones, answering customer calls, or talking about work. Just some much-needed family time.

Dale spent the weekend helping our boys build their very own skate park for their fingerboards. They learned how to use power tools, follow plans, and problem-solve along the way.

It's not always easy to slow down when you own a business. We put so much time and energy into taking care of our customers that sometimes we forget to make that same time for ourselves and our families.

We're incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve our community, but weekends like this are a good reminder that behind our small business is a family, too.

Just the Tip Tuesday: What You Can't See Matters

There are plenty of things around our homes that visibly show their age, whether it's worn siding, peeling paint, an aging roof, or outdated windows.

But there's also a lot going on behind the scenes (inside your walls and beneath your home in the crawlspace) that you may not even think about because you can't see it...Like your plumbing!

Depending on the material, plumbing systems typically have a lifespan of around 50 years, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Just the Tip Tuesday: Locate Your Main Water Shutoff

If a pipe suddenly bursts in your home, do you know how to shut off your water?

Every homeowner should know where their main water shutoff is located BEFORE an emergency happens. If you ever have a burst pipe, major leak, or broken supply line, shutting off the water quickly can make a huge difference in how much damage occurs.

Here's your homework:

• Locate your home's main water shutoff (it may be in the garage, crawlspace, basement, utility area, or near where the main water line enters your home)
• Make sure everyone in your household knows where it is
• Check that the valve is accessible and not buried behind storage
• Make sure you know how to operate it

And if your shutoff is old, difficult to operate, leaking, or you don't have an accessible whole-home shutoff, that's something we can help with.
