The manufacturer warranty covers the shingle itself, meaning defects in the product. The workmanship warranty covers the install: the fasteners, the flashing, how the valleys were cut. Most leaks in the first decade trace back to workmanship, which is the one people forget to ask about.

Every winter somebody goes after an ice dam with a hatchet, a hammer, or a bag of softener salt.

Cold shingles are brittle. Chipping cracks them and you find out about it in April. Salt goes after the fasteners, the flashing, and whatever is planted under the drip line.

Low pressure steam melts the ice out without touching the roof. Slower, and it leaves the shingles the way it found them.

What install day actually looks like.

Trucks and a dumpster show up early, so move your cars out of the driveway the night before. It is loud for most of the day. Anything hanging on a wall in the room directly under the work will vibrate, so take pictures down and keep pets inside.

The crew walks the yard with magnets before they leave. If a nail turns up in the grass a week later, call and somebody comes back out.
