Exploring the Latest in Landscape Design at the Tri-County Home & Garden Show

I had a great time checking out the Tri-County Home & Garden Show in Roseville, CA!

As a landscape designer, I’m always looking for new products, materials, ideas, and vendors that can bring something special to my clients’ landscape design projects. Getting out to events like this gives me a chance to see what’s new in the industry, meet the people behind the products, and discover new possibilities that I can incorporate into future landscape projects.

One of the highlights was stopping by the booth of my friend Wesley Aring and seeing some examples of his incredible custom woodwork. There’s something pretty awesome about seeing the craftsmanship up close and imagining how custom wood elements can become a focal point in a landscape or outdoor living space.

And of course, I couldn’t let the day go by without checking out the Tiny House area with my wife, Susannah . We both loved walking through them and seeing all the creative ways people are making the most of small spaces. Tiny houses may be small, but they definitely pack a lot of design ideas into a little footprint! We will definitely downsize at some point and live in a Tiny Home! (One for her and one for me, connected next to each other of course!)

For me, these shows are about more than just looking at cool stuff. They’re an opportunity to keep learning, stay connected with landscape industry professionals and vendors, and bring fresh ideas back to the drawing board for my clients.

You never know what you’re going to discover at a home and garden show… sometimes the next great landscape design idea is just one booth away!

In case you’re new, here’s 3 (of many) things I love! A little peek behind the landscape architect…

When I’m not designing outdoor spaces, you’ll probably find me enjoying these three things:

Family – hands down, my favorite thing in the world.

Travel – I love seeing new places, experiencing different cultures, and finding inspiration along the way.

The Yankees – lifelong fan. Win or lose, I’m still watching! 😂

Landscape design is what I do, but these are a few of the things that make me me.

I was pleasantly surprised to see so much new landscaping at the Buffalo Bills, new stadium, Highmark Stadium!

It was also great to see one of my all-time favorite plants, Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster” aka Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass abundantly planted there.

Karl Foerster Grass is the first ornamental grass to receive the Perennial Plant of the Year Award® (2001), earned for good looks, long-lasting plumes and undemanding growing requirements. Green foliage grows in a two foot clump and I n early spring, stalks rise up to six feet, capped with elongated, wheat-colored seed heads. In addition to its beauty, Karl Foerster Grass exhibits tolerance for heavy clay and compacted soil and will not reseed. Plant in sunny, dry locations and use as a backdrop for flowering perennials and it can be grown in Zones 4-9. It was named in honor of the late nurseryman, Karl Foerster (1874-1970). Mr. Foerster was responsible for introducing this grass, as well as many other acclaimed plants during his distinguished career in horticulture.
