Today at David A. Simpson Park, our owner Richard and office manager Kayleen had the honor of retiring the American and POW/MIA flags that have proudly flown. Both flags were respectfully replaced with new flags, and the old flags will be properly retired this weekend, with their ashes buried in American soil as part of a sacred tradition honoring our country and those who served it.
David and Ginger Simpson are longtime residents of Elk Grove, active and respected community members, and wonderful clients of Arbor Tech Services. We are grateful for the opportunity and trust to help facilitate such a meaningful act of respect and remembrance.
This Memorial Day, all of us at Arbor Tech Services would also like to take a moment to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Memorial Day weekend is about more than barbecues and spending time with loved ones. It is a time to honor the military personnel who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day of remembrance for the heroes who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.
As families and friends gather together this weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this holiday and recognize the unimaginable sacrifices made by our military service members and their families. We are deeply grateful for all who have served and continue to serve our nation.
From our Arbor Tech Services family to yours, we wish everyone in Elk Grove and the surrounding communities a safe, peaceful, and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

May is a great time to apply mulch around your trees and plants! Due to rising temperatures and longer days, soil can quickly dry out. A fresh layer of mulch helps the soil retain moisture by reducing evaporation, keeping roots cooler and more protected as the weather warms up. Mulch also helps regulate soil temperature and improve overall soil health as organic mulch slowly breaks down over time. Applying mulch in late spring gives your trees/landscape a strong foundation heading into the hotter summer months, helping trees and plants stay healthier and strong during periods of heat and drought, especially out here in the Valley.
Simple Steps for Proper Tree Mulching:
• Remove grass or weeds around the base of the tree before applying mulch.
• Apply mulch in a wide ring around the tree, ideally extending out toward the drip line (the perimeter on the ground directly beneath the outermost tips of the branches) when possible.
• Keep mulch 2 to 4 inches deep for best moisture retention without suffocating roots.
• Most importantly, keep mulch pulled several inches away from the trunk. Avoid ā€œmulch volcanoes,ā€ which trap moisture against the bark and can lead to rot, insect problems, and disease.
• Replenish mulch as needed throughout the year as it naturally breaks down over time.

The weather is shaping up to be beautiful this weekend, which means more time outside enjoying your yard! As you’re walking around, you might start noticing your trees could use a little ā€œclean up.ā€ And when it comes to smaller trees like Japanese maples, it’s easy to feel confident grabbing the pruners and giving them a quick trim. STOP RIGHT THERE!! There’s a catch: Spring and Summer are actually the worst times to prune your Japanese maple.
During this time, the tree is in full growth mode, pushing out new leaves, moving sap, and storing energy. Pruning durning this season can cause stress the tree which can lead to excessive sap production/bleeding, expose delicate inner branches to sunburn, and increase vulnerability to pests and disease.
What might seem like a simple trim can actually set your tree back or impact its long term health and structure.
The ideal time to prune a Japanese maple is in the fall, when the tree is entering dormancy. This allows for cleaner cuts, less stress, and better healing heading into the next growing season.
So this weekend, enjoy your yard, but maybe leave the pruning tools in the shed! Your Japanese maple will thank you later šŸ

California oaks are some of the most iconic and valuable trees in our landscape, but they come with unique challenges that homeowners should be aware of.
Oaks tend to retain large amounts of water within their limbs, and during periods of sudden heat, especially after a cool or wet spell, this retained moisture can create internal stress. The result is unexpected limb failure, even in overall healthy trees.
How can you reduce the risk??
• Proactive pruning: Removing overextended, end heavy limbs helps reduce stress and weight load.
• Weight reduction: Strategic thinning allows for better airflow and less moisture retention.
• Regular inspections: Identifying weak branches, cracks, or heavy lateral limbs before extreme heat hits can make all the difference.
• Avoid overwatering: Mature oaks generally require less supplemental water, too much can contribute to excess internal moisture.
Oak trees are incredibly resilient, but they benefit from informed care. Taking preventative steps now can help protect your property and preserve the beauty of these trees for years to come. If you’re unsure about the condition of your oak, it’s always best to consult with a qualified professional.
